Elephant mod?

Featured Replies

Interested to know what people are using as a bung to blank off the inlet as I'm using a buks fizz plastic cork with insulation tape around it to increase the diameter at the moment and would like something a bit neater...

  • The crank vent to atmosphere mod? Nothing that I know of. Been running mine for a LONG time with no side effects.

  • Put my pipe straight to atmosphere, saves remembering to empty cans and make brackets etc. looks more subtle under the bonnet too

i bought some blue silicone hose off ebay 1metre was only a couple of quid. i used a big bolt to blank off the other bit, i lopped the head off the bolt then ground a slot into it so i could screw it in with a screwdriver from the inside so it cant be seen, just looks a little better than using some old manky hose! i have had someone tell me there was smoke coming from under my car at the lights before though!

+1

the bolt sounds good but was wondering if there is anything more oem?

Good pictures there for people to get a good idea.

To blank mine i have a very large metal plug cap style with alan key and looks very oem as its pretty flush.

I just ordered a very fancy looking catch can aswell thanks to those photos, i was going to vent to air.

Can you not just use somthing like the oil catch can as a filter then? And keep everything linked up how it should be so no need to make a blank for the intake.

Just like an inline fuel filter?

Just an idea anyway! I've never done this mod as i think it must be fitted for a reason...

This mod has been around for years and people who have already done this wouldn't look back!!! Iv had my doubts about it too, but I trust people's judgement that have run this for years! Next is too get the EGR off and give it a good clean,

how easy??

Hardest bit is removing the pipe connecting to the EGR and the bottom nut holding the EGR to the manifold.

After that?

Piece of cake.

What stuff should I buy to give it a good clean?

What are the actual gains of doing this then?

Obviously the car will breath better and gunk won't be put back into the system but will this give any performance gains?

Doesn't give any gains but as you stated your self it doesn't put all that **** back through the system so that's a gain for me

What stuff should I buy to give it a good clean?

Carb cleaner, and a small wire brush/toothbrush, a metric fu*kton of rags.

Its only an oil breather so providing the correct level of oil is in the engine not much is going to come out anyway.

The fact exhaust gases are put back into the manifold should be more worrying than some fumes from warm oil. I checked my pipe recently while cleaning the egr valve and it was clean.

No - really.

Under boost, you are actually creating a vacuum - whilst the top of your crankcase is actually positive pressure.

You'd be amazed at how much oil goes through your system with this setup in place.

Proof?

Do the elephant mod, start your car and hold your hand at the end of the pipe and tell me that it's not positive pressure...

Worth every penny of it's cost to put in place.

Im doing it just to keep all my new intercooler system nice and clean.

And hutchy to your other question you can link it back up from the catch can i have seen it done before. I am going to still vent to air after the catch can though just personal preference i guess, there is no right and wrong really except for not blanking off the intake, thats a big no no .

Meh...

I bought a couple of silicone bungs to cap the inlet mani, got 1 sat here spare :)

I started with a catchcan when first did elephant mod, but found that it needed emptying more often than I expected (mostly water) so just used the washing machine hose looped over the back. No problems and now about 100K miles since done.

you know you say you've blanked of the vacuum pipes to the egr? that will cause the shudder because the anti shudder valve wont work? is this right? anyways when you turn off the car once you've blanked the egr it will shudder on turn off. my does it, it does make the poo yourself first time it happens :)

Thats correct

Kenny, your blank looks neat, what is it and where did you get it? I'm guessing you've left the plastic mating connector on the inlet pipe?

I'm not going to bother with an oil catch can as I feel the engine bay is busy enough already...

  • 1 month later...

What diameter piping is needed for this? I'm sure I've seen 3/4" mentioned but just wanted to be sure before I ordered.

Also how much do I need 1 or 2 metres?

Ta.
