VW Golf purchase?

Featured Replies

in terms of reliability Golfs always seem to come out below Skoda in all the surveys. A friend in the trade also told me that within the VW group, top spot for quality is swapped regularly between skoda and audi, VW are some way behind and then bottom of the heap are poor old seat.

I have never had an issue with my seat, we run vw's at work and I have just added skoda and seat in to the mix. VW in general appear to be quite good although I do think it will vary from dealer to dealer

I think these days it's really more down to luck than anything else if you get a lemon or not. All manufactures can make reliable cars and they all make duffers occasionally too.

Golf nicer looking! Simples! Also has a vw badge not a skoda one ;)

...started to look elsewhere, including the Golf, as Skoda don't do a true hatch like the Golf and Focus.

Confused, a 'true hatch', the Octavia is a hatchback?

And it's a proper hatchback too with a sizeable boot. The same wheelbase as the Golf, its just a few inches longer which gets you the biger boot.

I know what he means though i dont consider a car a hatch back unless my lab fits in the boot. Things like the octy hatch and mondeo, insignia type of hatch are closer to saloons IMO. They are still practical but a hatch like this is no use to me whereas a golf hatch would be. I did in fact own two and they were both great cars.

Golf vs octy. Tough call. Now i am more aware of the skoda brand i would pick skoda evey day as i love getting maximum bang for my buck. Skoda gives you more for less. Is the VW badge really worth the extra plus a few nicer touches here and there?? Doesnt make the golf a bad car, far from it just that skods is better value for money. Money no object we would all buy the best car we could i.e probably BMW or Audi or similar but money is a considering factor for most of us but to varying degrees.

I would accept that a golf is worth slighlty more than a skoda but how much? Now that is the question only each individual can answer.

Oh I agree. my friend is a VW dealer and he told me they monitor quality, they have a sort of league table and there is quite a bit of inter company rivalry, but consistently Audi and Skoda are out in front apparently. Not sure exactly what they measure mind you. I'm sure no one would knowngly let a lemon out of the factory anyway.

  • 1 year later...

I recently bought a 5 door 60 plate Golf GT TDI DSG with 22k on the clock from JCT600 in Sheffield.

I searched auto trader for a similar spec Octavia, ignoring age and specifying the price I paid for the golf and it threw up 2 cars. Both the same age and with higher mileage. I appreciate that th'octavia is more powerful but I would have expected a raft of cheaper Octy's based on Skoda's VFM stance.

I would say the golf is a little better quality wise. Not much in it but that said the skoda is now so close but I guess the price now agrees too

You will get more car for you money going for a skoda of the same age. They are the same car so more for the same money is always a bonus. The same applies to seat's aswell.

If you are dead set on the golf then i would imagine any major mechanical problems would be the same ones suffered by members on this forum. I loved my golf but i would never buy one again purely because i now know i can get more value in the skoda range and its not like the VW badge has the kudos of say Audi or BMW.

Do Audi and BMW have Kudos?  Huge suppliers to the fleet market, low contract hire and pcp costs hardly make them an exclusive product.

Better badge perception. Right wrong or indifferent

'Reps' cars are just that,  we used to call them 'Travelling Salesmen'.
