Abs and traction light on

Featured Replies

Dear All

My abs and traction control lights are constantly on.

1.9 tdi, elegance 55 plate and 145k miles.

Any idea what could be causing this problem. I am hoping to book in to the garage next week.

Your help would be appreciated.

Wheel speed sensor?

I think it's best, that you find closest VAG cable owner from this forum and let him check it over. It could also be broken wheel ribbon cable (that attaches airbag to system). At least mine problem was in that. It can be fixed or by buying new one.

Wheel speed sensor?

The above is what usually brings on both of these lights at the same time. :) VCDS will tell you which corner is out.

where are you located as someone maybe able to scan your car for you

got the same keep poping up every time i start

A flat battery or an odd size wheel can cause this. I had ABS light come on my old audi when i fitted a spare wheel after a puncture which was different size to the other 3 so triggered the wheel speed sensor. As soon as i replace the tyre and put the proper wheel back on the light goes out again. Same thing with battery going flat or being disconected / jump started all the lights come on but go our after a while.

@browser where you getting an airbag fault warning on start up with that problem you had? i think i have the same. every time i start up i get an airbag fault warning an only sometimes i get the abs and traction lights on,

I had this after I changed my N/S CV boot - the wheel speed sensor hadn't located properly. Pushed it in fully and the issue went. Have you had any work done on any wheels recently?

no it happened 3 weeks after i bought it. since then i have had 1 cv joint and 2 cv joint boots done but it still comes on every now and again ,the cruise contol is also not working at all. wonder if it might be a speed sensor?

Have you had a scan with VAG-COM already?

Believe me it will be a lot faster. Instead you are asking here what could be wrong. Invest some money, buy the VAG-COM cable yourself and then you don't need to pay anymore to VAG specialists. Off course you need to learn the VAG-COM also.

My problem was, that when I changed my steering rack, one guy thought that it would be a fun idea, to turn the steering wheel to right really fast and keep it spinning. Conclusion was, that ribbon cable inside the steering wheel snapped from it's socket.

Had one guy solder it back on (it is really small). After that steering wheel calibration and teaching ABS block, that he still exists in car (ABS block lost it's memory).

have you a link to buy one at a reasonable price? thanks for the reply.

VCDS costs about £250 and there is little to no flexibility in this. There is an owners map in the VCDS section on this forum so you might find someone near you.

Yes, but if you need it for only fault code reading, then I don't see any point why should you buy the original. There are several fault code readers for like 20 quid in ebay that does the same job. As for me, then I have my own workshop where I can use original VAG-COM but that's there for a reason also.

Where you can buy it? I think Ebay. We have here our own certain people and companies that sell these things. If you need it just one time, then take the advise from devonutopia and find someone near you.
