Choice between 140 & 170 bhp?

Featured Replies

Guys - thanks for all the info, I understand that there is a technical difference between the two engines but purely from a driving point of view is there much difference? If I go for a 140 PD am I going to be drumming my fingers wondering why it is so slow?

You won't be strumming your fingers as it is NOT slow. Not a racing car but certainly no slouch and the gearing on mine is at 2000 rpm I am doing 78-79 mph, and you can't get much better than that. In fact the engine never goes above 2500 rpm and that only in !st. I have 18"wheels which ups the mph per 1000rpm a little. I have also found it is a false economy to get into a higher gear too early. In town I have often gottn into 5th , the engine vibrates a little ( circa 1200 rpm ) and if I change down to 4th ,the engine revs go upto 1500 and the mpg on the read out also goes up. Seems that 1500 min is the best for economy?

Peak torque is between 1750 and 2500 so that's where the engine is most efficient.

Thanks, I will bear that in mind and stick to 1750 min.

Yes the engine is most efficient around 1750-2500rpm at full load. But best efficiency is only at full load. As your load drops, the efficiency plummets. For this reason, diesels in particular give the best economy when pulling the highest gear they can smoothly run in.

If your engine is running smoothly and producing enough torque at 1500rpm, then it'll use less fuel there than in a lower gear, lower load and higher rpm.

Stopped off on the way home from work and paid the deposit on a used Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI CR Elegance (170BHP) in Rosso/Ivory, 10 speaker upgrade, Park Assist, Tyre Pressure Control and all the usual bits. Should be ready early December.

Peak torque is at 3200rpm on the 170 hp units

2,395rpm according to my Shark RR printout.

Well you can see my charts , our peak hp is about the same but something is up with the torque the shape isnt right and also the pull is in 3 rd gear and its more usual to use 4th

The brochure agrees with Wokwon; 1750 - 2500 rpm.

Telling from experience, i had a 140hp Octavia II, and now superb 170hp superb with DSG. Feeling in Octavia was much more 'jumpy'. Have been driving also superb 140HP and to be honest, there is not much of a difference. U wont miss it if u buy 140hp version. Although for some overtaking it is nice to have stronger version sometimes :)
