Why is it that..............

WHy is it that the screw-in towing eye for car front bumpers have a left-handed thread?

Yeah I found this out the hard way, in the pi$$ing rain when my clutch pedal packed up. Not good for blood pressure levels ;)

What screw-in towing eye? :rubchin:

don't know, but the skoda dont

You got one with your car?

Ummmm - the Fabia does. It's in the tyre-well tool kit and to fit it, you have to take off the front bottom grille by the fog light and screw it in.... is the Octy different? :)

Chris

Dunno - never noticed one in the tool kit in either of my Octys - I'll have a check later.

as far as i remember yes it is, remove the offside grille and the eye is there waitig

I assume it's so you can't use a "normal" bolt and do something silly with it ie bolt a large spike on to go jousting.

They use left handed threads on gas fittings and i'm sure that this is to stop you using the wrong fittings/ making your own - ie a safety thing.

I assume the car is along the same lines

I should have said.... its not my car that we noticed it on.... but my colleagues Mondeo.

I had noticed my Octy diddnt have one yet it did have the cutout in the spare wheel foam thingy - I assumed it was just missing, obviously not though.

Ah. Had two Mondeos personally and never noticed a towing eye - but maybe it's a recent thing.

My Octavia definitely has none, I checked. There are several empty spaces in the foam insert in the spare wheel, but none of them look towing eye-shaped. Maybe one of our more fortunate brethren with a towing eye could take a photo of it in situ in the took kit so I can see if there's an obvious hole where mine should be? :D

the towing eyes are solid on the car, the rear pokes through the skin(ooo matron) of the bumper and the front one is hidden behind the offside black grill thingy

Aha, again. In fact as I was writing my last response I was thinking "surely they're fixed" - can't believe I actually went and looked for a screw in one :o:doh:

Cue robmawer.....

Shush, you! :D

Must only be the Fabia with a detachable one then - I've certainly only had fixed ones on my previous cars. I'll take a photo of it in the tool kit when I get home for all to enjoy ;)
