High insurance...Doesn't sound right to me

Featured Replies

I'm 19 with 3 points and No NCD...

I'm currently £110 p/m to insure my 2002 1.4 16v fabia...I am wanting something that may last longer and better on fuel so have been looking at standard 1.9tdi's...I put in to get a quote for one I found and it was £220p/m Does this sound right?

I work in insurance aswell this is including a 30% discount and online discount?

Cheers

I pay £2100 odd this year, 19 with 1 ync and driving a 2004 vrs :) its like £163 per month or something

**** me! Ive never paid more than a grand on insurance and im only 23 and have had a scooby, skyline, a cupra r and a clio 182!

Get your mum on ur insurance as a named driver or your dad!

Holy ****, how?!?!?! My first year was when i was 18, paid in full for the year on a 2008 1.2 clio with 75bhp, cost me £3200!

Pretty impressive! I`m also 23, my first car was well over £1500 (nova), £1700 (punto), £1400 (megane) £1600 (fabia) and down to £900 now. Tired all the various tips to get it down, and also loads of searching. I think this shows just how different each situation is. Just get lost of quotes and see how it pans out.

Trev, out of interest what was your first car? Looking for my brother and we can find nothing cheap! If yours was less than a grand then it could be worth checking out.

I know that being a young age with points hikes it up a fair bit. Happened to my mate when he got points for a bald tyre,

Do a quote without declaring your points and you will see why it's so high. It also depends where you live to how much the quote will be. I'm paying £1400 on my vrs and I'm in a high crime area. Mate of mine had the identical car 2 miles up the road and his was £800. Both of us started driving at same time and now have 3 years ncd

I had a seat leon 1.4 first, was 980 fully comp, one and only year i had someone else as main insurer and me and my mum as a named driver, my step dad used his ncb on my car as he only had a 1.2 so didnt need it.

Used that for a year, got a ncb from direct line then got my civic, was same price.

Next 3 cars were, leon cupra, skyline and scooby, all over £900, then last year i had my clio which was £650, now my fabia at £420.

I will have 2 yr ncb in jamuary as i crashed and rit off my liner 2 years ago.

Since my first policy, i hae used elephant or admiral, me as main driver, my fiancee has been on it for 3 yrs since she passed her test and my mum.

2 women on the policy = cheap prices

I have my mates mum and dad on as my dad doesnt drive and they were happy to do it for me...Even with all of the above though I have 30% off so nomally it would be 250+ a month for a 1.9tdi standard? I was just really suprised at the outcome, I live in a PH2 postcode so it's not too bad. I dont really want to look at changing insurer till april cos that's when i get 1 year NCD.

I wouldn't say so... Depends on your postcode I'm 21 no points 4yrs NCB and I pay £180 a month so possibly not no lol

£288 fully comp with 100 quid excess on my s3

(Per year, not month :p ) It would be cheaper but my wife wanted in

on the insurance (She's 29 but only had a full licence for 4 or so years) so that put it up a little.

Not bad for a group 18 (or 36) car.

But I am fairly old compared to some of you lot, with at least 15 claim free years

and live in a pretty decent postcode.

The prices they dream up for you young lads are absolutely ludicrous IMO.

I feel sorry for you as it's not just youngsters who drive too fast and crash cars.

I think come April time when mines is up for renewal I will be shopping around alot, start with the usual people on here and see how it goes

Ditto about the high insurance I'm on the same lines as grrr666 ..... although mines a little higher as Im probably not quite so ideal P/Code or age...still closer to £400 a y/r, and still not happy with that, but it should be on the coming down.

So I can empathise the pain if you are paying more like that every few months !

So is adding your parents etc on policy but only as named driver not the same as "fronting" fraud then ?

Trev is suggesting adding them as named drivers but not declared as the main driver (this I understand is the clinical definition of "fronting")...I guess it isn't quite the same thing when they are only named then ?

But then I don't really understand the insurance industry but do know they can be real ******s if you get on the wrong side of them so not worth taking too much risks with the facts and best to be honest as poss

I payed 2000 at 18 with no ncb. When my quote comes through the post early next year it will be 760 quid. With 1yr ncb and ill be 19. You must be doing something wrong mate. Try bell insurance and put your parents as named drivers!!

As some posters have mentioned, get a "good driver" (on paper at least) named on your policy- that might mean older than you, plenty of NCB, no accidents and so on.

I'm a named driver on my lady's policy and it saves her a couple of hundred quid per year.

Hope that might help.

Edit: make sure you try the comparison sights as advised on moneysavingexpert.com too- it ensures you cover a good percentage of the market. Paired with a named driver, saves a fair amount.

I seemed to start on the insurance ladder just before the prices got hiked. My first car a 1.0 Saxo was £1500 and each year I've bought a quicker car and it still dropped. I've now got 6 years ncd, no points or claims and I pay, £560 including insurance to make my excess £0 and I'm 23 :) oh and I can drive other cars third party!

I did have to fight for that though my renewal was nearer £750 which is what really annoys me. Flux being a broker should have given me the best price possible first, but instead I had to haggle it down to a price I felt was worth the expense of 6 years worth of no claims!

Don't forget just accept the price they give you!

if there are other cars in the family try admiral multicar and increase the excess to £500 - I insure SE VRS, Merc 180K coupe and fabia 1.9TDi standard for less than £1500 - it helps to put oldest as named drivers on the youngest -

Changing your job description can reduce insurance costs too. For example, if you're unemployed and call yourself a house husband/wife - the price goes down a little. Exactly the same thing, just described differently if you get what I mean. http://www.moneysavi...nce-job-picker/ attempts to give you an idea how much you could save.

I'm guessing the points are the killer in your case, but my insurance dropped nearly £500 just by moving from a council estate in Leeds (high crime etc), to a South Wales Valleys town.

Certainly don't assume the company you work for is cheapest. Insurance can easily range from £200 to £3000 for the same car and person, depending on the company. Insurance is a very competitive market place so definitely use the comparison sites.

my first year, 17 , no NCD, just passed, 1.4 fab £3500. thats all i got to say, those figures speak for themselves!

I thought fronting was having an older person as the policy holder and yourself as a named driver. When it comes to a claim you have to prove the car is not yours and its the policy holders. If your parents are like mine and don't understand iPod connectivity then when the insurance look at the car and see flash parts on it they will know its not their car. Which can result in no claim being paid out car seized and crushed and a max £2000 fine. I know this because the dearly beloved is a copper. And at the end of it you still have to pay the full years premium plus a possible £2k. Is it worth it? Could be like £5k out of pocket.

I thought fronting was having an older person as the policy holder and yourself as a named driver.

Yes indeed, and is insurance fraud. Many people do it, and I'm sure many get away with it. With prices for insurance like £8000 or more a year, can you really blame people?! Of course everyone says it increases the cost for everyone - I'm not totally convinced. If someone can't afford £8k, they aren't going to pay it anyway. All you need is an awareness of the legality and you can blag your way out of it, unless there's something really silly going on like the car is registered in young person's name and has a private number plate resembling their name.

Of course I'm not advocating insurance fraud though.

However, remember the other way around is fine, and perfectly legal. Even if they'll never touch the car, adding parents/partners to insurance can reduce the cost.

I just managed to get my price down from £1900 last year on a standard vRS to £1300 this year with an engine map, coilovers and 312s. There was about a £350 difference if I hadn't added the big brakes. Nice to see my insurers want me to modify my car properly.

Interestingly, I asked how much extra it would be if I paid monthly and was told it would add £1000 to my price. I think that is appalling and I will be contacting the ombudsman to try and get and explanation.

At the end of the day its your own choice who you put on your insurance. Just be prepared to lose everything if it all goes nips up!
