dunlop sport's handling question

Featured Replies

Hi driving 2012 140 diesel twindoor , 21K Km . I have noticed a strange behaviour , at motorway speed or higher I'm finding the steering wheel feels like it "slips" by about 1 deg of turn intermittently when slight change in road . At straight on driving it feels like the tyres " loose " grip and the steering needs to be corrected by 1 deg ? . Tyres Dunlop sports , 21 k km , they are not on the, wear markers and look about 50%,worn .another theory is maybe esp issue ? .very strange feeling to get at speed , wondering if anyone else has had a simular experience ?

I had the very same problems with these tyres. Loads of rubber left in the tyres and to drive, especially at speed you would think you had slicks.another problem with them was they developed flat spots. I had two sets and will never have them again. I recently changed to Hankook 4seasons and they are an excellent tyre. I had totakethe Dunlops off even though there is @ 15k left on them. The lads in the tyre centre thought Iwas nuts.

Thks for the reply , it if could afford I agree would fire the 4 tyres off and replace .

Your symptoms sound like a wheel alignment issue. Have you had a 4 wheel alignment done recently?

Hi no alingment done , car is only 3 months old . Will be getting it done when tyres next changed .

Sounds like you're describing 'tramlining', where the tyres follow road imperfections wiothout steering input (front or rear). I have no experience with the Dunlops, but have noticed this with other brands to a greater or lesser extent. The problem becomes far more noticeable as the tyres wear (and well before the tread bars indicators become an issue).

The best brands for resisting this I have foubnd to be are Michelin (especially Pilot Sport, if available in your size), and Continental SportContact. Worst I have experienced (but never bad enough to warrant replacement) have been Pirelli strangely enough.

Hope this helps.
