Mk4 Golf Immo2 Speedo Cluster, Can it fit Octy1?

Featured Replies

Just wondered, as without measuring i cant tell fittment

I prefer the golf blue dials etc, also do they need coded to the car?

Just a thought the now

Cheers

nooo man....the golf's speedo is ugly

Better off with bora sport dials thats if they fit

I looked at fitting bora sport clocks, from what i remember they are a different shape so wont fit.

"Make sure you get standard VDO clocks, Sport type clocks are not suitable as the indicators and main beam display form part of the plastic facia which is replaced with standard"

Hope this helps

cool, sounds a bit too involved if i have to fabricate a fit, especially as mine are working ok anyway.

cheers guys

If its just the colour and you're handy with a soldering irom you can (probably) change the SMDs to a colour of your choice, (assuming it is actually SMDs in there).

I did it on my old Clio Cup, changed everything to blue (dash, window switches, etc) took half a day but was well worth it, that was working from a kit with detailed instructions though and I'm not sure there's one available for the Octy so would be more challenging

I think we may have found something you can help with haha, being so close. Dark hero just did gees smd's all I want is the Speedo rev counter cluster and needles as mine is tooooo dim. Apparently its easy enough to get into.

I'd be reluctant to offer to do someone's without doing my own first but I'd be happy to help you bud, good chance to learn and that way any **** ups are on yours first anyway :p

Just have to find out which SMDs are required, the switches will probably be little LEDs and should be easy if you want it all to match, the fiddliest bit on the clios is the climate control but I had a poverty spec cup so managed to avoid that lol

I can get all that info, I know someone who's done it. May end up deciding its too much bother anyway hah

Too dim? Mine goes quite bright with the controller dial. Normally I have it wound down pretty low though.

Yes it has to quite dark outside for me to see it when its all the way up. Is there maybe something I can do to the switch?

Replacement cluster will need coding to the car otherwise it will not run, for this to happen you need the 4 digit SKC from both your current cluster and the donor cluster otherwise you cannot code the immobiliser in the cluster to the engine ECU. Not sure on the fit, but you'll need a diesel cluster as they are different.

ah thanks. I knew they needed coding but wasnt sure on proceedure.

Any way of brightening it up on standard smd's? Is the roller switch maybe at fault?

It does sound a bit like your dimmer controller (either the roller control, or the distribution controller) might be faulty - can you have a look in someone else's Octy to see how bright theirs is in comparison.

I can do better than that, i know of an octy breaking near me, ill have the switch off that and try it out

seriously it has to be DARK outside to see if its on or not, in daylight even with hand over it, no way of telling

I think there is the thumb controller and a distribution unit (looks like a relay, up under the steering column).

it does dim and brighten, just looks like its calibrated too dark or something

We used to just bypass the resistor in the old vw illumination dimmers as they had a habit of melting and causing dashboard burnouts. It means that it'll be the brightest it can be all the time. That was mark 1 and 2 golfs though so not sure how tricky it would be now. Think it was the same on older peugeots as well?

SM LED time mate. im sure you could do it as mine have been done. Dark hero is a legend.. i could so not be arsed to sit there that long doing it.

bora / golf clocks will not fit, and any new cluster will need coding. :)

It'll be too dark because over time the dimmer control resistor impedance increases due to age - eventually resulting in it going to **** and not working at all.

Replacing for another will probably improve matters dramatically ;)

so is that the switch itself?

Yeah mate.

The dimmer on them progressively gets worse over time and dies. A common fault it seems.

aha i shall have another by saturday, for free. Cheers mr coates

No worries, let us know how you get on. :)
