Octavia mk2 headunit swap

Featured Replies

I picked up my adapter from skoda today then went down to pick up my mk2 octy vrs.

How do you remove the pannel surrounding the oem headunit and heating controls etc? Does it just pop off?

I guess once thats off its just a matter unscrewing the oem unit (steam unit in my case which has awful sq) and fitting the adapter kit?

Open the ashtray and pull the bottom of the fascia forward. Work your way up the fascia but you might need a credit card / plastic ruler / trim tool to remove the top edge as mine always seems to get stuck without it.

The Stream has the screws hidden behind four plastic covers. Can't actually remember how they come off, but do remember it being fairly obvious once the fascia was removed.

One thing to watch out for is that the screws can be easily dropped inside the HU as there are holes right next to them. Use a magnetic torx driver if possible.

If they do drop in, they can generally be recovered easier by removing the front plate if the Stream.

On the back will be a standard VAG quadlock, one aerial and that's all.

so simply pull it forward till it pops off starting at the bottom?

Sounds simple enough.

I've already bought the iso adapter and aerial adapter so just need to wait for those to arrive.

Doing the same today to start my Bluetooth fit (albeit with a Bolero unit), I could get all but the top of the trim off, so tried a different tack and started at the top using a credit card (so it bent round both) to go in the top corners and then gently prize off. Then I just did the bottom doing as advised from the ashtray.

It does just pull off, but the top left always seams to be a bit tight.

Either be brave and give it a decent tug, or as said above slide a card in while pulling it

Glad it's not just me that finds the top edge reluctant to come out.

I use a cheap trim tool to lever it out. Works easy enough.

There's a bit of nack to it, certainly. It'll difficult the first couple of times anyway, especially if it's a new car.

But with time and practice it's possible to remove the trim without extra tools.
