Warm-up Issues, BKD Engine

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My first post, so please be gentle! It's a super forum you have here :)

My car seems to warm up fairly slowly (I've not compared it with another, it just seems to take quite a few miles to get full water temperature) Also, the other day I was sat in a queue on the motorway and the temp actually went down from the usual 90C

It's due a service soon so I thought I would get any water temp related bits changed. Are there any sensors or a mechanical temp switch I should be swapping please?

David

Welcome - I have a BKD PD140 estate and it generally takes around 5-7 miles (around 10 minutes) of gentle / average driving to get the water temp gauge up to working temp (90 degrees) according to the dash gauge.

Not sure how yours compares to that, but I've had mine for over 2 years and it's done over 118k miles with no issues.

David,

Mine is just the same and has been for the 3 years I've owned it. As far as I know this is completely normal, they are thermally efficient engines and don't put much heat into the coolant. The TDis were fitted with auxiliary heaters for some markets but the UK wasn't deemed cold enough to warrant it - debatable I think!

As above, sounds perfectly normal for a PD140.

Mine takes the best part of 10 miles to warm up in the depths of winter. I have also seen the temp drop below 90 when left idling in traffic in winter.

I agree, my old BKD engined Octavia used to take around 9 miles to get to 90 and that included a small element of motorway driving.

Hello mate,

Welcome to the forum. I don't think you have anything to worry about at all. I've a 1.9 tdi (105) which takes about 8 miles to get up to temperature, mainly on dual carriageways & motorways.

Cheers

FP

Mine has also dropped after rolling down hill in cold weather.

Welcome to the forum. What you have happening there sounds quite normal. I have a 6 mile drive to work and in the winter my temp guage will barely get above the 50 degree mark by the time I get to work. When it does get to 90 it usually sticks there resolutely no matter how hard I'm pushing the car, even though the temp on the climatronic, if I bring it up does vary a bit. It will drop a bit if you are coasting a long way down a hill in very cold conditions but will soon come back up when you start using the power. What you have happening there sounds quite normal to me.

When it was real cold one night last winter, -9 or so, I nipped round to a mates in my PD140 Scout, the car was well up to temperature when I pulled up outside his garage, let the engine running and the climate on.

A quick hello turned into a bit of a lengthy chinwag, about 15-20 mins or so, when I jumped back into the car the temp gauge was well below 90 and the climate was blowing luke warm air instead of hot like it was before.

Obviously the climate was asking for more heat than the engine was producing at idle.
