Need a Car Battery but how to choose the correct one

Featured Replies

Since September SWMBO's Rav4 is rarely used & as such the battery has now stopped providing enough power to start the car.

We've jump started it a couple of times to use it but the battery now fails to start the car within 24hours.

So what we need is a battery that has a decent amount of ommphh to start her car if left for 2weeks (we do have a solar trickle charger that can be connected).

Both are the same price and spec wise look identical.

Are there any other batteries I could consider?

Matthew

basically if its 12v get the largest capacity and cold crank you can get in the space.

In my car i have a 95 ah job, cos it just fitted, what a difference.

Matt,

Give South Yorkshire Batteries a ring on Edmund Rd. I've had Varta's from them for various cars over the last 20 odd years and they've never failed me with regard to type, quality and price.

Looking at the Varta sheet for a Rav4 (guessing on your spec) they list a B32 or a G7 (the latter is for the Diesel)

B32 - 45Ah, 330CCA, 238x129x227

G7 - 95Ah, 830CCA, 306x173x225

What I dont know is the difference in price.

However, for info I have a Varta B33 on my MX5 - 45Ah, 330CCA, 238x129x227 and, having left it unused for a number of weeks recently (pit's probably not been out of the garage since I got the clutch slave cylinder fixed in mid-September, it fired up straight away last weekend with only a slight sluggishness. It is garaged though which probably helps.

Thanks,

Our RAV would need the B32 but I need to have a proper look at the battery tray to see if it would accomodate the Diesel battery. A quick look into prices suggests that the Diesel batteries are around £85-£90 so £35+ more expensive than the petrols.

The RAV isn't garaged (and never will be) as my bikes live in there to keep warm & dry :) . As a result the cold weather will play a big part in battery life, the Rav also points towards the Peaks so when its breezy/windy always gets the chilling wind through the engine compartment.

Put the reg number into euro car parts website and let them do the rest! Bosch are excellent batteries. Don't forget BRISK25 discount code at checkout for 25% off.

I should have put in my original post I got the Bosch information from the Euro Car Parts website ;) .

I've now found out that the Petrol Rav4.2 shares the same battery tray as the diesel, its just a case of moving the securing bracket to a different position to accomodate a larger battery :) so now the hunt is on for the diesel equivelant battery as it should suit the longer periods of no use better than a lower powered battery.

Shocked to see that for my puny 1.6 the recommendation is for a 60Ah, 540CCA battery compared to those RAV batteries.
