Car takes longer to start when up to temperature

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what causes this? I've noticed that when my car is already up to temperature, it takes longer for it to start. By this I mean merely a couple of seconds longer. Sometimes feels like it won't start but then gets going.

From cold, she starts well. almost straight away.

That's funny.

I was just googling hot-start problems on a PD130 as mine is the same.

Seems it's very common and possibly a few things:

coolant temeperature sensor

crankshaft sensor

starter motor/connections to it

battery

How can you test any of the sensors? Or is it just a case of trial and error?

You would probably need some diagnostics to measure the output of the sensors vs. the expeted/requested output.

As mentioned, this is a common fault and normally the battery on its way out or the starter breaking down when hot.

If you know a friendly tuner, there is a fix for it in the ECU software. By this I mean raising the IQ or start ( a well known fix)

That could explain my problem then.

Been thinking we need a new battery for a while. The plugs seem to take a while sometimes, PAS light comes on first thing and headlights dim a lot when turning the wheel.

Think ours is the original battery by the looks of it (2004 car).

Well for the first time this eve I thought it wasn't going to start!

I pulled up at tesco's click and collect and loaded the shopping in. When I turned it over it turned and turned and fired after good 5 seconds of cranking.

Going to try a new battery first as the PAS light also came on tonight even after it had a decent run to leeds and back yesterday.

Had this problem, Changed camshaft sensor & coolant sensor both at the same time so sadly cant say which one fixed it but either way fixed my problem, cost around £80 for both sensors for genuine dealer parts.

I do happen to have a fault finding list for checking faults on all these sensors at work, but it only tells you which voltages should be at which plug and which time etc... so quite technical really.

Edit: I also had my car scanned for faults and it came up with camshaft sensor so was a good plce for me to start.

Will it bring up the engine light? mine doesn't have anything up on the dash, glow plugs seem as normal.

onto the battery, it seems to dim my lights sometimes too.

I had no lights on the dash when my sensor(s) failed.

Will give it scan and see what it shows up.

Thanks
