THUD! when stalling... why?

Is it 'Normal' to get a huge thud when stalling? it literally feels like the pistons have just shot out?

This thud has also happens when the wheels spin in the rain and the ASR kicks in.

Idea's?

i did get abit of a thud when my car kept cutting out due to a faulty sensor.

That other thud sounds like the traction controll is cutting all power to the wheels to stop them spinning.

I, sorry *cough* my missus gets that when she stalls it (scares the crap out of her!) but I've never heard it when losing traction?

Raining, puddle on the left side of the road I caught around the corner with the power down full, the left wheel lost traction and it just took the power away with the thud.

Every diesel I've driven makes a awful thud when you stall it.

Does it sound a bit like this when i first pull away. Double thud as 2nd gear wheelspins up. No idea what it is, and in this case I have ASR off so its not the anti-slip control, its something else, probably in the diff, or the driveshafts?

Even with ASR/TCS switched off the EDL will still function so I believe.

I've never owned a diesel until now, so I've never experienced/understood this. I had a 4motion Golf previous with a EDL, TC, and never experienced a thud so I'm not sure if that rules this thud out?

Its a total cut in power when the thud happens, and its quite violent thud. Whether thats to do with the much higher compression levels in diesel cars than petrol I do not know. Maybe I'll try google.

I know the sound you mean. Thought I'd grounded the car on a speedbump once it was that violent, but I had been stupid and put the car into 3rd instead of 1st to crawl over it :giggle:

Stalled the Octy once and it done the same. Made me jump I thought I'd fooked it lol.

I always thought that this was the sound of the DMF complaining - followed by the bang as your jaw hits the floor and the DMF packs up because you haven't heeded its whingeing???
