Powerflex Vs. SuperPro - Dogbone bush - Review

Featured Replies

Good afternoon fellow Briskodians :p ,

I had a 70shore SuperPro Dogbone bush fitted to my vRS as an upgrade to the standard bush.

SuperPro seen here: http://www.awesomegti.com/car/skoda/fabia1/superpro-lower-engine-steady-rear-bush-kit-ib-mk4-fabia-polo-9n-9n3-1-4tsi-ibiza-6j-fr-cupra-bocanegra-polo-6r-gti-fabia-5j-vrs-models

The first and most noticeable thing after having the SuperPro fitted was the increase in vibration and noise through the cabin (vibration due to the engine movement being transmitted through a solid bush). Secondly, was how keen the car seemed to be when accelerating from low revs, the best way of describing it is 'imagine a dog pulling on a its lead'... just eager to go! And finally the much more assertive and direct gear changes.

Brilliant, I thought.... These 'novelty' factors soon wore off due to the resonating sound that was now in the cabin constantly, my keys jangling in the ignition and the steering wheel and window wipers shaking. This became unbearable for me as I am often sat in stationary stop/start traffic.

Time to look for an alternative bush, after considering going back to standard I didn't want to lose the precision in gear changes that the SuperPro provides. Poweflex have recently released their version of this Dogbone bush in 65shore hardness. I took the plunge in ordering the Powerflex thinking 5shore can't make much of a difference.... How wrong I was.

Powerflex seen here: http://www.awesomegti.com/catalog/product/view/id/67599/s/powerflex-bush-pff85-620r/

I have just fitted the Powerflex bush and the car is now next to silent, there are NO vibrations at all  the crisper gear changes have been retained. The only downside (not even a real point tbh) is the slight delay in acceleration in comparison to the SuperPro.

Don't get me wrong, the SuperPro is brilliant if it suits you and your driving style, but, for day to day driving and an improvement over standard the Powerflex gets a massive  from me!

Hopefully this will be of some use to some people :)

Cheers! have been looking into these 2, but i do 300miles a week and couldnt stand the vibrations of a solid one!

Powerflex really is the way forward imo, and for 300miles a weak i would definatley go for that one :)

Link to each one would be useful :) thanks for review :)

Good idea. I've linked them up with a site sponsor :)

Excellent write up. i've been considering moving over to the 65 shore one as my keys rattle like anything

My keys rattle like mad! I will have to see if I have an uprated bush.

Good review dude!

Great, I really need to order one of these :)

How easy is it to fit? DIY job?

Cheers

3 bolts to remove the mount, cut the old bush out, clean it, grease the mount and new bush, press in :)

Thanks

No hydraulic press or anything needed then!

I'll get one ordered.

A press is best but a vice and plank of wood work just as well :p as long as there is even pressure so the bush doesn't split or get caught etc

If you would like a firmer mount but don't like the idea of a: spending money to get more in-cabin vibration, and b: aren't afraid of a little extra DIY...

Pick yourself up a rubber floor tile - take your dogbone off, draw around the original bush including where the hole is, and use a stanley knife to cut it to shape so it fits in alongside your original mount.

Fit, and check.

Repeat as necessary until you have increased the firmness of your mount up to the point where you start to get in cabin vibration.

Worked for me and countless others without having to spend silly money on what is effectively a bit of plastic, without any risk of spending it to find out you can't live with cabin rattle.

And then if you are sure you can live with the rattle and the shimming idea isn't enough? Then buy a poly mount.

These are meant to help with wheels pin and traction? What's your thought on that?

They definitely help reduce wheel hop under hard acceleration, and give the gear shift a much more positive clunkier feel.

Interesting, up until a year ago I worked for SuperPro UK and my Fabia VRS was the first to have this bush fitted. There was a small vibration on tick over through the steering wheel however it seemed to bed down and disappeared after 1 week of driving - admittedly rural Somerset doesn't get many traffic jams so the time spent sat at idle was minimal.

I have just spoken to SuperPro and they are in the process of bringing out a modified version of this bush which was originally designed for the 3 cylinder Diesel cars as they seem to run slightly lumpier than the 4 cyl versions. The new bushes will have bullet grooves down the side of the bush which should remove vibrations while still retaining the plus factors as described in the first post. These can obviously be used on the VRS’s as well and should cure the vibration problems on tick over. After seeing this post SuperPro are now going to rush some stock of the new bush through the factory in Australia and they should be in the UK very soon.

PM me if/when you know the code and shore hardness for it please so I can add to my info list........

The Superpro on is fine on my car......but I have a smoother petrol engine

In bushes the higher the shore harness number the more NVH will be transmitted...

As to fit them my guide....

The Powerflex 65shore for Diesel applications has the grooves down the sides also. I presume to aid reduce vibration :)

I had the superpro one, It was awful! Reluctantly kept it on for about 1k miles to see if it got better.... It didn't.

I am a super pro fan so I would try another one if they did one and its supposed to be better?

Show SP this...

You can hear the resonations through the cab and see the vid distorting due to the INSANE vibrations fed into the cabin, perhaps it highlighted another engine mount being tired? I dunno, but it was off within a week!

I deleted my video the other day :-/ all you could hear was that awful drone and my keys jumping allover in the ignition :-/

Made me feel ill with the sound at idle lol ruined your ears and got right in my head!

Rev to over 1.5k quietened it down a lot lol.

To drive though, I LOVED it!

Hey everyone! I'm sorry to revive this thread but I had all my bushings changed for SuperPro and the engine mount done too.. and the vibration is so bad at idle and is literally unbearable.. I am just wondering if this will soften up at all as it is brand new..

If not then it has to come out but is a shame as it is so good to drive :/

Don't think it will soften up that much mate. Is it the 70shore one? I got the Powerflex 65 shore and it isn't that bad on idle but it is much better to drive :)

First port of call If I were you would be to replace the dog bone bush with the aforementioned powerflex alternative, the difference between the two is day and night. No more drone or keys/steering wheel/windscreen wipers jumping all over.
