Low miles

Featured Replies

Wow that is low mileage, but, tbh I'd rather have my old girl with 142k on the clock. It's highly likely been used for many short journeys & cold starts. Mines been brought up on the motorway lol :D

Lol I know where your coming from, was quite shocked when I seen that!

13k miles and the waterpump replaced?

13k miles and the waterpump replaced?

4 Years OR 36k miles

36k?! Lol I'm sure it gets less and less as time goes by.

Thats what my local garage told me and thats when mine got done by a previous owner, ive also heard 60k and 3 years, 70k and 4 years, 100k and 4 years, i was just going to go with 4 years!

If it breaks replace it, otherwise i'd change mine when the belts are due to get changed.

The belt was changed on schedule at 4 years since it got there before the mileage limit. therefore the water pump was changed.

The mileage is indeed low, lower than my dads greenline even. His 09 reg Fabia greenline has just past 24K miles, and its only that high because I sometimes borrow it for weeks at a time. His car has managed 4K miles in the last 12 months, 2.5K of those have been done by me.

4 Years OR 36k miles

thanks.

Blimey, I thought 29k in 5 years (the mileage when I bought my car last year) was low! I'm at 43k now but haven't had a cambelt or water pump change. Should I have by now?

I've only done 50,600 on my fabia since i got it new back in Jan 2001........ :giggle:

And NO it has not been short trips...........I walk to my work..............So once or twice a week I drive to the neareast town which is a 36mile round trip on either main "A" road or twisty "B" road.............I also have done the odd long journey.........like a 500mile single drive!

And as for servicing.............say for example 4yrs/40,000miles..............that means get the item replaced at 40,000miles if it is less than 4yrs since it was last replaced..........or as like me where the mileage is not done then that item is replaced every 4yrs!!!

Simples!!!! :giggle:

My 55 plate Honda civic has 6/7 service stamps and less than 23k on the clock.... Can a car be over serviced!?!?

Wouldnt have thought so

My book says 80,000, I know lots of people were told 60,000 by their dealers, but 36?! Was that a dealer that told you that? Or crafty indipendent?

Anyway, I'd personally not go for a car that's done 3,500 miles a year.

Independant but one i trust. Knew him for years and has never done me wrong!

May just have mis understood what he seen/heard! i go for 4 years which in turn is normally around 60k

The cambelt question comes up time and time again doesn't it. I believe the definitive answer depends on whom you ask - ask Skoda Europe and they'll say 4 years/120,000 kilometres which translates as 75,000 miles. However Skoda GB in their infinite wisdom, and possibly (cynically) in an attempt to get more service trade, lowered the mileage limit to 60,000 miles - presumably after a spate of failures.

Whatever it's 4 years so any Mark 1 vRS running on its original belt is on borrowed time.

Nice car in teh advert - however the last service looks suspiciously cheap - I suspect it might only be an oil change one. And £506 for a full four year service, cambelt and water pump is cheap too. I think £7,495 is a bit steep though even considering the mileage - wonder what my 38k one would make?

Bought my 55 plate VRS in April with 17,000 miles. Now on 22,000 as I do about 8,000 miles a year.

When I had my last VRS in 2006 it was always stated on this forum to change the belt and pump at 4 years or 40,000. I work in maintenance and we are doing alot of work with predictive maintenance rather than preventative maintanance. 4 years or XX miles is preventative maintenance. I would say that low mileage users need not change the belt after 4 years as there is no way it will require replacing. However this is the manufacturers policy so if you ignore it and anything happens you're stuffed. Plus people will expect it to be changed at 4 year intervals.

4 Years OR 36k miles

Its 4 years or 60k pre 2002 (52 reg) or 80k post 2002

Thats for the belt only ^^^ no interval on the coolant pump whatsoever...

but obviously if your paying someone to change ur belt u may as well get the pump replaced at the same time to reduce labour costs :)

I don't think I'd buy a diesel for that kind of low mileage. I did about a fifth of this car's whole mileage in the space of 10 days earlier this year....

I know the issue of low mileage being detrimental to the mechanical well being of a vehicle is hotly debated but in my 40 years experience of servicing cars and bikes (mine and others) I can't say it has made any difference. It's only if something is sitting for weeks or months without being used that makes the biggest difference.

Just checked and our Fabia (54 plate) is just on 29k miles and doesn't seem to be suffering for it.

I think I depends on the type of trips tbh. A little old lady driving to the shops & back twice a week never gets warm, never gets above 2,000 rpm. New owner gets it, drives it properly and bang, turbo/engine goes. A story iv heard a few times.

I guess this is the sort of thing that causes cautious drivers to moan about speed humps damaging their suspension - they could go for years with the suspension hardly moving leading to dirt and rust on the damper rod, so when the dampers eventually go full travel then the seals get damaged.

The missus' Furby gets used for a lot of short trips but I take it out and rag it stupid on a regular basis to reduce the risk of premature component failure.
