Water in rear footwells

Featured Replies

Hi all I know this will of been covered countless times but gonna start at the beginning I have 56 plate vrs that has been leaking water into rear footwells and steaming the car up as its damp i lifted rear carpet today on the passengers side and pulled a piece of sodden soundproofing out it's soaking it appeared there was water sitting on the bottom of the rear door surround seal more than likely the seal but need to entertain the idea it could be the rubber seal in the floor allowing water in has anybody had the same issue and rectified it? Love this car but these little snags are wearing thin

Just go and buy silicone matt, no offense to the above that clearly is a bit of a rip off for some "sealent as you call" clear silicone or black or white what ever will do the job exact same and cost at max a fiver. :p

Thanks guys but its not the door card inner metal panel as normal i think its the door seal surround as that is where the waters sitting and running into the footwell

mine was sitting on the rubber seal aswell, honestly take the door card off, just the bottom screws and pull it back and have a quick look at the seal inside then you'll know. but more than likely it will be the inner seals :)

Is your door seal leaking like this?

exactly how mine was (y)

The water reached there courtesy of a door carrier leak which was quite difficult to diagnose. This was the other tell-tale sign, ie the single drip of water visible directly under the door card.

To effect a temporary cure, tape a piece of thickish plastic sheeting about 4-5" wide along the door sill and make sure that it just goes over the rubber seal and stays in place there with the door closed. My temporary cure for one door has been in place for some 3 years!

It's most likely to be the usual door carrier sealing issue - have you actually taken the door card off to check?

If the underlay is saturated and it's seeped through to the front, you'll need to take it out to dry it out properly.

Or put a domestic dehumidifier in the car for a few days...

As most of you have described it is the door card seal jobber but i'm struggling to understand hw it is gettin to that part of the seal as i understand it the water runs down the inside of the door and out of the drain holes at the bottom the only way i can understand it would be if the door was filling up confused! Gonna get a new steel piece with a new firm seal and use a tube of sealant like i did on the drivers side 2 and a half years still going strong :)

Please note silicone will not be of use as it won't work with water. You need a gutter or drain sealant

mines been done with silicone and been okay for last 6 month so ...

Pretty sure it does mate as plumbers use it in baths etc and the stuff i got is used for sealing windows in and i used dow corning silcone on the other side and it wrks

He means it wont adhere to whatever your applying it to if its damp or wet. It needs to be bone dry, plumbers gold is the best stuff to use as it works on wet surfaces.

YEs take this advice please!

If you're gonna attempt the fix now, the chances are it's cold and wet, so a regular bathroom sealent just won't set (read the label, they always say use in 100% dry conditions), some people have suggested 'plumbers gold' as this sets in wet conditions.

Buy the right stuff, and fix it just the one time!!

I used bathroom sealent on my car 2months ago, and it's started leaking again. I thought I could get away it (with the doorcards being wet and cold weather outside) with using it but it just can't work as I've found out!

Oh rite dude calm down the uk is never bone dry or warm I'm not stupid I'm not gonna apply it to wet areas give me sum credit I'll do a bit of web searching if I was in wrk I'd use prc that stuff goes off woteva

the doorcard sponge seal will be constantly wet in this weather no matter what you do to them, and that's why no regular sealent will cure.

and seriously if u can't take advice then don't ask for it next time,

u get no credit

Mate ur a **** grow up

Listen to what they say. Did mine with gutter sealant which sticks like ****, but when the water keeps working its way down through the door the joint you are trying to seal will always be wet, in short had to scrape all the old gutter sealant out and re did it with plumbers gold. Now that stuff really is sticky and will set without losing any sealing properties even if wet. Unless you have a heated garage that the car can sit in for a week I wouldn't risk silicone or even gutter sealant.

To be honest, this is sound advice.

You'll be cursing yourself if, in 2 months time, you have to remove your door cards again, break all your door card clips again, to try to scrape off sealant that hasn't worked, and reapply plumbers gold in sub zero January temperatures!

I did my rear doors in September, and they have been fine since. My fronts are showing occasional signs of leaking, but only in really bad rain. I'll try and wait till spring to do them.....I hate working on cars in the freezing cold!
