petrol/diesel starter motor how to tell the difference

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm getting a second hand starter today. I just want a quick bit of advice re making sure its for a diesel. Looking on ebay, all the petrol starters are physically much smaller than the diesel. Is this a relatively safe method. I just wonder in case the one the scrappy man has isn't a bosch one to match up.

Well it appears the problem isn't the starter?? I took it along and the bloke reckoned there was nowt wrong with it. He aaid to make sure the earth was good. I cleaned up all the connection points, which has made it much better when starting, but it still isn't as good as it should be. I guess if the earth is bad on the starter, it also isnt putting much charge back into the battery?

one more question: I've been told that the starter for the cube van, which is how my pick up started life, is different to the standard diesel starter motor. Is there any truth in this? I don't for a second believe the motor factor.

there are only types of starter fitted to these whole range of vehicles (ie hatch/estate/pickup etc).... petrol ones are 800 watt, and the diesel ones have a reduction gear and are 1000 watt hence why they are slightly bigger... you can interchange them between petrol and diesel models too the fitting to the gearbox is exactly the same, i had a diesel starter on my petrol engined pickup
