Friend of mine wants a Civic Type-R

Featured Replies

So give me a shout if you see a silver one in the North West for sale!

He definitely wants a silver one, looking to spend about 11k. Can't wait till he finds one, so I can have a go :D

Just nipping over to the CTR Owners Club now, see if I can find anything.

Steve

why??????

Britvic Type aR5e more like! Tell him to get a proper car :)

What would you buy instead?

If you like to rev the nads off it to get anywhere than fine, It has no guts, constantly playing with the 'box to get a move on, It is really tiresome to drive.....

On a race track it is the dogs danglies, but in the real world it is just a pain!

Oops..Haven't answered the question :)

Dunno depends what he's into, guess he likes Jap stuff then???

I did mention the torque angle to him, I'll see what he says after a test drive at the weekend.

Type-R just came out of nowhere really, he can be a bit impulsive like that. Criteria are practical, reliable and fast. Of course there's other stuff that matches up, but I think he's set on a Type-R really.

well i spose the ctr is reliable (Cos its a honda) and fast,

well for 11k and under you could go for, among others.....

*Golf/Bora 2.8V6 4motion 51/52 reg

*Beemer M3 N or P plates (I hate BMW's but the M3.....just to own once)

*Scooby or Evo

*Have Seen Audi A8's R/S Reg for about

TWO of the lads in the office have just bought a Civic Type-R each. One of them is a silver special edition jobbie, with red Recaro seats and other bling. Very VERY quick, but quite a tyreshredder.

A lot of the speed seems to be in how it's geared. When I test drove one a year-or-so ago, the steering felt wierd and the car felt out of control when it was being booted. I dread to imagine what it would be like in the wet.

Really not my cup of tea, but if you're into high-revving Japanese motors, then I can see the attraction. It's very competent, well built and should be reliable.

I drove the type r recently, and it wasn't too bad. Felt lacking due to the difference in torque between that and the Furby, but a capable car all the same; anyone in a standard Furby who claims to have kept up with one is either lying or the ctr wasan't trying.

It's definite a love/hate thing though, a test drive is an absolute must before deciding upon buying one.

My GF has just brought one they are despetivly quick they make a lot of fuss going anywhere but do shift, biggest down size is amount of motorway noise the GF and I have to SHOUT at each other...its not a drone of the zorts its a combination of engine, wind, wheels and zorst and is the main reason people get rid of them after only a few thousand miles so there are good bargins to be had out there!

Racing Teg Type R from Litchfield Imports is a lovely motor, but may be a little basic for day-to-day use! ;)

The Civic is a very fast car on good roads, but becomes a real pain to drive on most of the UK back roads and don't even try to drive it fast in the wet! :D

I drove mine fast in the wet and also didn't have any problems on the backroads near me, coped with them well enough to get away from a bugeye wrx.

You must be a better driver than the guy who took me out then ;) He was all over the road in the wet and couldn't get the power down!

Ian tends to take it along to events at Castle Combe and do his sales pitch with it round the track, if you're ever down this way ;)

I think the type R is a reasonable choice. It out performs and handles Golf/Bora 2.8V6 4motion, would be cheaper to run than a Beemer M3, Scooby, Evo, or Audi A8 and feels like much tighter and more presise than a Corrado VR6. I think a Furby is nothing like a CTR, and cannot be compared - but yes mid range a chipped one will stay with a CTR ??!! I don't think Octy vRS is as involving as a CTR, but certainly a better choice than some of the others. I think the only other 2 alternatives to a CTR is a ITR or a Clio 182 cup. Renaults are cheaper to buy and are as quic, but handle better and has better steering. But they loose money fast, have a bad rep in some areas, dealers are ****e and reliability in general is poor, as is driving position.

Is that fair ?

I'd say so.

Another alternative to consider especially in remapped form is a Leon Cupra R.

Think a V6 4motion would murder a CTR, by the time the Britvic had found a gear, the VR would be gone.......

Have you actually drive a VR6 Rado??? Probably one of the best FF Cars ever made, Precise, communicative and devastlingly fast and having been in one in a little jaunt with a britvic I can say they are very evenly matched, the VR just having the edge due to it's superior torque!!!

i think the only place a car like a ctr and things like the RS focus come into they're own are on a nice flat race track:)

I've driven a V64m and CTR and the V64m is considerably slower than the CTR (even with the advantage of 4wd the V64m is slower to 60). Also had 'play' with a Corado VR6 when I had the CTR and it was dead even.

Must be all the 4WD crap! Would think the in-gear acceleration times would favour the V6 powered cars though.......

Can't seem to find anything anywhere though!

Well found stuff for the Rado VR6:

Max Speed (claimed)144mph

Standing qtr mile 15.7 secs

Terminal speed 91.6 mph

30-50mph in 3rd 4.8 secs

30-50mph in 4th 7.1 secs

50-70mph in 5th 9.4 secs

30-70mph thru' gears 6.8 secs

Braking 70mph-0 173.7 ft

Quite impresive Really!

VR6 and ................supercharger! Job done...

But I like the civic, could be made nice, but will always have the side of noise/feeling (talking the dealer supplied civics)

Must resist castle coombe....when?

I don't see any problem with having a car that you have to thrash and actually takes it in its stride.

Thats one brilliant engine that can do that all the time and live :)

I feel like I have to wind the octavia vRS up too if I want to go anywhere fast, from 2000rpm to the red lineOtherwise it's just a family saloon  Don't see a problem with a car delivering it higher up rev wise.:

Having both octy and fab, theFabia vRS is a totally different experience in terms of an easy, quick drive (apart from running out of puff at the top end of the gears).

So don't you lot give the octavia some stick to get feel of speed?I find it far harder work than the fabia to get the thing under way

I see nothing wrong with the CTR's 'thrash if you want to go fast' principals.Isn't that what hot hatches should really be about

:iagree:

mine gets abuse if i want to move sharpish

Civic Type R figures:

Max Speed 146mph

Standing qtr mile in 14.7 secs

30-50mph in 3rd 4.2s

30-50mph in 4th 5.4s

50-70mph in 5th 7.8s

30-70 thru' gears 6.5s

0-100 is around 16s compared to 19s for the Golf.

Blimey, a full on discussion - was just asking to keep a look out! :D

To answer beeftech's list:

Golf/Bora 2.8V6 4motion 51/52 reg - not quick enough, too heavy and a bit boring

*Beemer M3 N or P plates - He's got a Beemer at the moment and those are too old

*Scooby or Evo - Fair call, but running costs

*Have Seen Audi A8's R/S Reg for about
