STRANGE TYRE WEAR.! ONE SIDE ONLY

Featured Replies

To start with i will list the things my car has recently had over the past few months -

  • ALL SUSPENSION ARMS [MEYLE HD]
  • KW SHORTENED SHOCKS/SPRINGS
  • POLYURETHANE ANTI ROLL BAR BUSHES
  • REBUILT BRAKE CALIPERS
  • NEW EBC DISCS/ EBC RED PADS ALL ROUND
  • GENUINE WHEEL BEARINGS ALL ROUND
  • INNER AND OUTER CV JOINTS
  • LEMFORDER REAR AXLE BUSHES AND BRACKETS
  • STD AIR FILTER
  • BOSCH FUEL FILTER
  • EGR DELETED/REMOVED
  • GENUINE HANDBRAKE CABLES.
  • LAZER WHEEL ALIGNMENT [HUNTER EQUIPMENT]

Also the car sits on -

  • FRONT WHEELS 19X8.5 ET44, 15MM HUBCENTRIC SPACERS, TYRES- 235/35/19.
  • REAR WHEELS 19X9.5 ET44, 5MM HUBCENTRIC SPACERS, TYRES- 245/35/19.

Ok so the problem....

All of my tyres are wearing evenly except for the front passenger side! the tyre is being worn down on the inside, its not sawtooth wear either.

Now over the past few weeks ive noticed that the car feels crashy on the passenger side, ive noticed this when driving over potholes or uneven road surfaces.

the passenger side feel like it crashes down into a pothole whereas the driver side is stiff and firm.

ive also noticed a light creaky/crunchy noise when the car contacts a speed bump and then when the car goes down the speed bump and makes contact with the road, i always slow down for speed bumps/potholes etc travelling at est 20mph.

there is also another noise which i think must be related to the above,

when turning right [car weight on left side] i feel a hollow rumble/hummy noise, this is not so apparent when turning left [car weight on right side] but it is there. this noise is not there when travelling in a straight line.

also when going from a smooth road surface to a ruff surface it sounds like in sitting in drum as the noise get noticeably louder.

ive had a visual check on all the suspension components and they "look" fine.

i was hoping to find a leaky shock absorber but they are all dry.

So.....Any suggestions on what this problem could be as its driving me crazzzzzzy? :wall:

Laser wheel alignment...

Did they check also the subframe? One possibility is that you have over worn subframe bolts and subframe alignment is wrong.

There are 6 bolts in front that you should tighten or replace the 18mm bolt. Replace it because it is a one time bolt.

You can see them from these pictures - http://www.myturbodi...leaking-red.htm

Thanks thats interesting, im assuming the part numbers are identical for vw passat and skoda superb?

i will add this to my list of things to do

Yes, the part numbers are same. Actually Golf people use Passat/Superb subframe bolts on their subframe, because the bolt in there is just a piece of crap.

Sounds like your S curve (or Raised toe) setting is out this is done by moving the track rod end up or down (if you look you will see that there is a bolt going down through the track end), bad news is it takes specialised equipment to set and only a handful of dealers have it so you will have to check around

My wife's car had wear on the outer inch or so of the rear near side. Alignment, springs etc all fine. Ended up where it was getting smoothed out there with over 4 mm of tread on the rest of the tyre so I replaced it. The replacement is wearing evenly. In the end we think it was just a duff tyre.

very interesting. i didnt know this

also this horrible crunching noise from the front passenger side seems to be getting louder, im wondering if nackred bushes would cause this noise!

with so much cosmetic surgery done it could be anything that's one where you are going to have to some investigation, could be anything from a duff bearing to somthing as simple as a piece of plastic rubbing

Can anyone explain me the S-curve (raised toe) thing. With pictures would be best. I just don't realize what are you thinking of.

It is confusing and it took several tyres for me to admit that it is important. (in the fabi box with their track rod ends they actually give a diaghram of the adjustment) My laymans understanding of the raised toe is to keep the wheels dead straight on the camber during a full lock.if the track rod end is not sitting at the right angle the bottom of the wheel will either push out or in causing wear. The track rod end can be adjusted up and down on the ball end (if you look at a track rod end on a passat or superb there is a bolt which goes through the ball side of the track rod end this has a 15mm slot to allow movement up and down) and to adjust there is a bolt which screws down into the ball pin from the top. if this is not correctly set it will cause the wheel to go out of camber when turning and it will also leave the car more boaty than normal. Believe it or not the theory in all the crazy arms fitted on the superb is to give perfect turning the problem is the system cant take the abuse it gets from the roads. I do know from experience that not a lot of garages either know about this or have the equipment to set it, but if the tyre is wearing to the inside it needs to be adjusted up by loosning the side bolt and tightning down the top bolt then retightning the side bolt

Ok, I will mention it tomorrow to workshop, when they perform 150000km service.
