Struts on hatchback boot not always working

Featured Replies

Hi all, since this cold snap has started the boot auto opening funtion on my Superb2 hatchback struggles to open off the button, it will pop up but not open fully, I have had a look through the end of the plastic trim and can see that gas struts are used to open the boot. It this a sign of the boot struts need replacing or is it just the norm for the cold conditions.

When open it stays up fine and once used it will open everytime, issue seems to be when boot left closed for a while, I was just wondering if it was worth changing them as it looks a simple job once I figure out how to remove the trim or will I be wasting my time as the new struts could probably do the same thing?

Cheers

PS, any tips on removing the plastic around the side boot/hatch locking mechanism?

My guess would be that it is affected by the cold weather, the gas may loose pressure as it contracts from the cold, and also the piston may be stiffer when cold. However, I'll have a look at mine later on and keep you posted.

All the best

It says in the manual;

The automatic raising of the small boot lid can be impaired at temperatures below +4 °C.

Every modern car I had recently has had this problem. One in particular could not keep the hatchback in the air at all, at minus 6 and I had to use a wooden prop.
