Which one is faster?

A standard Fabia vRS or a 1990 Mk2 Golf GTI 8v?

Reason I ask is, I am genuinely confused as to which car is faster... OK I know the Fabia has a higher top speed (Golf runs out of revs + gears at about 125), but acceleration wise I dont think its so clear cut...

Certainly in the midrange on ingear, the Fabia was clearly faster, however, I think in a flat out race, the Golf might have the measure of it.... power to weight ratio of the Golf is 120 bhp per tonne, and the Fabia is 100 bhp per tonne, but obviously the torque does help overcome the Fabia's extra weight to a degree.

I am not actually that bothered which one is faster, but what do you all think? I think its a close one myself, but the Golf *feels* faster (engine noise, gives a greater sensation of speed etc) as long as you rev it.

Oddly, I seem to drive the Golf safer than I did with my Fabia, I feel the lack of sensations such as steering feel, sensation of speed, and also the fact the Golf clearly isn't as safe in a crash and I am always aware of this might have something to do with it, but its easier to have fun in it at normal speeds - I felt like I had to drive the Fabia at a ton all the time to have fun in it...

I wouldn't think there's a great deal in it.

It'd be close... The Furby probably feels quicker due to torque, but I think the Golf might pip it in a straight to 60 race - but that isnt what the furby is all about...

You are right about noise - far more feedback from any petrol compared to diesel...

One thing I found when I got the Fabia for the first time, and drove it around some of my favorite roads was that sometimes it was very difficult to tell without looking at the rev counter or at the gearstick because of the lack of engine noise, you never quite knew for sure, which I found strangely disconcerting. Obviously I got used to that though. Nevertheless, petrol to me still seems more rewarding to drive than diesel (even if they aren't neccesarily always faster).

I agree! But I love my furby, shhhhh... she might hear...

Paul,

The std Mk2 8v is quite a torquey motor as it is - I actually prefer it to the 16v. In terms of a straight line sprint I've no idea but would think based on the book figures there wouldn't be much in it.

The Mk2 8v is the best Golf GTi they did IMHO, that includes the new one.

My Fabia is quicker than my bro-in-laws Mk2 16v. But not by much. From my experience, the 8v is similar to the 16v to 90/100 mph then the 16v gets quicker.

It would be close - but the fabia is a quicker car all round i would say.

Fair enough.... is yours chipped?

Anyway, most crucially for me the Golf gives the greater sensation of speed, which is important IMO in these days of speed cams and stuff like that :)

My car is standard with a green filter.

I have to agree is you about drivability. The most fun i ever had was in a diesel series 2 landrover. Very scary experience and did 45 mph flat out.

My Fabia is a daily hack and it is quiet, reliable, comfortable etc. But i do love my old cars - had an array of 'oldies' and i love them, far more than newer stuff. But i need a car, and cannot afford to have an unreliable car -

Mk2 is a top choice though - love them on full chat with induction kit :)

i would have said the 16v would beat a furby vRS. the 16v is actually a fair bit quicker than the 8v. but i think the 8v was a better all round car to own and drive

It's not alot better in the newier one (90/defender) doing 50 in that felt really fast! I think for out right fun, nothing beats my old mini days, ok not quick by any means but always was rewarding no matter what the speed.

Not that I dont love my fabia because I do, it's just a different style/way of driving

You want to have a go in my 205 then. 60mph feels like 100mph. A bit unnerving at first but good fun.

Ever tried a Metro 1.1 at 3 digit figures - vibration city ;)

My 1.3 Metro auto once hit 90mph I was well impressed with that as it felt really really fast, infact it felt like I was doing 140+

I like to state I was young and stupid then :o

To keep on thread I would think the fabia would be quicker. However,in my mind anything that feels faster is more fun! Thats why I find the fabia more fun than the octy sometimes :) .

As to the off thread bit,I scooted along at 100 in 1.3 metro turbo.(private rd etc etc)

Felt like driving a hovercraft.Bloomin scary

My old Panda 4x4 at 80mph was bloody terrifying!!!

Having seen plenty of 8V's v 16V's om drag strips/sprints etc, They are pretty evenly matched.....untill the Valver comes on the cam and then it's bye bye 8v!!!!!

If you've driven a valver you'll know what I mean about "coming on the cam" Get to 5500RPM and it Screams :) Love It Love it Love it!!!

8V easier to drive day to day as it's a v.lazy motor, actually IIRC the 16V has more torque than the 8V.........

On topic though...think a vRS would murder the 8v in the midrange 235Ibf.ft in the furby versus about 110Ibf.ft in the golf, also think they is only about 112bhp not 120....Anyway 5th is quite tall in the golf so top speed wise think they would probably be the same!!!

When you say "coming on the cam" has the 16V got VVT then?

No, but it sure feels like it :)

I know the 16v is faster, but in my budget it was probably going to be difficult to find a good one, and everyone I know who knows about cars says the 8v is far more reliable / stronger and easier to live with, and while its not exactly fast, it is fast enough when I want it to be, and it is at least good fun to drive for a

The MFA (MPG computer as you call it) 1st appeared all those years ago on the Mk1 in about '82-83 I think!!!

Dunno about Valvers being unreliable..........You can't kill a valver :)

Actually I think the Mk2 8V goes faster than that.. my car does 137mph @ 5,900 rpm, and I've clocked 0-60 time of 8.5 seconds...they share the same engine, so that's what I think...

the mk2 golf will only go upto around the 125mph mark. i definately agree the 16v is quick, good bit quicker when it gets going up the rev range. but they are more fragile than the 8v but still very good.
