Oil Pick up pipe

Featured Replies

After reading an earlier post on here where it was recommended that an oil pick up pipe was changed I started to google it.. I have no paperwork saying mine has ever been changed and as its on 92k I thought it best (after further reading) to get mine done

I just called Pullman and asked for a quote

They just called back and said there are a few different pipes it could be, but if its the one that goes into the sump then I'm looking at £421 to replace it, that includes gasket, oil and 2-3 hours of labour..

2 questions really, is it the pipe that goes into the sump (I'm guessing it is from the posts I have read but not 100%)

and does the price seem fair, all I have found from previous posts is that the pipe itself should cost about £8 (I couldn't find one for sale anywhere though)

and 1 other question, is there anyway to tell if the pipe really needs changing apart from changing (again I doubt there is but worth asking)

thanks

That's a stupid price. I think I was £20 max for the pipe the o ring and sealer to reseal the sump. It took at most an hour if that. The hardest wad the bolts at the gearbox bell housing end.

There is no way to tell if it has been done other than to take the sump off. Then you might aswell do it cause you have the sump off. Its the feed pipe for the oil pump in the sump you are looking for.

Don't pay prices like that for that job.

It's a flipping really cheap part. That's crazy. And no, the pickup pipe is inside the sump. It's a simple bolt on pipe with a gauze that is connected directly to the oil pump, and pulls the oil out of the sump reservoir.

It shouldn't add more than 30minutes to any oil change service at worst.

You want parts 2 and 3. The O ring was more expensive than the pickup pipe for some reason

pipe cost £12 O-Ring £4 all VAT inclusive, labour £210. then £30 for oil on top and £7 for oil filter... Price is better since giving them the part number... but does anyone else say this is now a good price or still to high

one phone call got the price down to £263...

if anyone thinks this is to high, does anyone know any independant decent garages in the North East, the closer to Sunderland the better

thanks again everyone...

That's still a nuts price!

If you are handy at all you can do this yourself.

Labour @ 210 is crazy... Maybe they think they have to remove subframe or something.

It is a 1 hour MAX job for a garage with a lift.

take 150 off the labour and then that's about right.

its times like this I was handy, but I wouldn't have a clue where to start..

but at least I have a figure in my head what I can accept from a garage... will give a few a call around later

As said its an easy job and that's a mental price, maybe you know someone that could do it for you? Took me about an hour it's really easy, the only thing to be careful with is that you don't put too much sealant on the sump as that can then block your new pipe, speaking of which I'd recommend using the dealer sealant.

Mines was on 110k with FSH and the pipe was about 30 percent blocked

omg that borderline criminal

it is such a simple job to do

drain oil ( my 4 year old can even do that )

undo 10 10mm bolts or allen heads

lower sump

undo 2x 10mm bolts holding pipe on

replace with new pipe and seal

small spread of sealer around sump

put the 10x 10mm bolts back in

fill up with oil

go to the dealer for parts you can get the oem oil cheaper than that and the oil filter aswell

my brother has said he is willing to give it a bash, he does most the work on his clio himself, from following guides and stuff,

gonna try and find a guide for him so he knows what he is letting himself in for,

but worse case scenario I have got 2 garages quoting £150 all in, deffo much better than 460 odd I was quoted this morning.

The only bit that is even remotely difficult is the 4 bolts on the gearbox end which is made much easier if you have something like this

Just be careful not to round off those bolts

I had mine done on the vrs-wrc at scottbank motors in southwick.

Paul the owner is a top bloke and has done loads of work on mine when I can't be bothered :)

I'm not sure what price he charged as I had it changed while I was getting clutch, flywheel, timing belt and water pump etc done, but I have £60 in my head for some reason and I supply all my own parts.

Hope this helps!

THIS is the size needed to get the sump bolts out yeh?

The sump bolts are 10mm hex head with a 5mm allen hole in the middle

hmmmm im seeing 8mm on Bowders build thread..

Bowders guide..

5mm or 8mm?

They are M6 thread bolts with a 10mm hex head and a 5mm allen key in the centre based on doing the job last week myself.

The other option is a 1/4" wobble bar and socket. You may end up needing these on the hidden screws, if the hex holes in screws have been rounded.
