Closest paint match for wheels - Silver

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a rattle can paint that's as similar as possible to the colour of standard vRS wheels?

As cheep as possible please :)

I've taken it upon myself to DIY refurb my wheels over the winter while I run my steels.

+1 on this...

Mine are starting to bubble - Would you recommend I spray over the bubbles?

Well I've got about 3 months, so I'm going to do them properly.

Sand down as much as I can, fill the dink in 1, then prime, paint and lacquer.

Good man Sam it a super theraputic process.

Personally I used Siminoz wheel silver from eBay when i did my second set of spiders and the colour wasn't bad at all.

My only advise would be to strip them all back and spray the whole thing rather than try to repair patches.

That way they'll definitely be the same colour all over.

If you like i have a spare set of standard alloys (as you do) and some left over silver I could spray a section and see what it looks like against the original colour...?

Again i'd strip them and do the whole thing.

Spraying over the bubbles won't fix the cause (probably cracked lacquer)

That would be great if you could

silver is a bit boring though Sam.....

;)

If it was me I would have them sand blasted, shouldn't cost more than £10 a wheel :)

Do hyper silver, looks lovely :)

I've toyed with the idea of a silly colour like orange or bright green, but I couldn't live with it day to day.

I like looking standard :)

yeah me too :peek:

I'll give a wheela quick spray later on and try to get a pic up tomorrow

This is the genuine stuff (kit of primer, paint & laquer). Good quality & an exact match for all German & most European silver alloy wheels:

PLASTI DIP! :)

Apparently Audi colour L1 H7 is the common alloy wheel colour used in the VAG group. A guy in the MK2 Octy section had his refurbed and this is a perfect match.

What is Audi Colour known as? Other than L1 H7?... Do halfords have it on the shelf? Haha

Avus Silver.

Sam I dunno if these help or not!

All i did was key in the surface and spray on a coat of Siminoz 5 wheel silver.

However it was so freaking cold that the paint didn't really take and to be honest I don't think I shook the can enough so the paint was kind of frozen when it went on! :D

Resulting in the patchy finish you see here!

That said it kind of show the difference.

I'd say the Simoniz paint is much finer than the original with the sparkle being much smaller particles.

I'll give it another stab......in spring when it warms the hell up!

Well it's not a bad colour, even if it is a **** poor job.... :p

I'll get some and see what it looks like :)

Sam if you want it doing cheap...

...I can do it for ya easily enough.

As for a colour that matches... Rustoleum Titanium Silver or BMW Titanium Silver are the best matches I know of.

Hmm, how cheap Chris?

I must admit, it would have to be a Saturday and Sunday job only for me to do them as I've not really got any room in the shed. The only place really would be the back yard as I'm sure Jen wouldn't appreciate me turning the kitchen into a spray booth.

NO WAY!! you'll be wasting paint and time.

Any colour silver shade, won't matter as they will look uniform when wheels are fitted to car.

Besides, by the time they age, get covered in road muck, and brake disc dust nobody could tell the difference. LOL

Another vote for stripping to bare metal.

If you don't at the very least strip them down to the bare metal underneath the bubbling where the oxidation stops... It'll only bubble up underneath your new paint again.

Recommendation for something that will last is strip down to bare metal, acid etch primer, high build primer, couple of coats of colour, and lacquer as an optional depending on the paint you use and finish you want.

Agreed.

Although to be honest for a max of 2 mins work it's not bad. I reckon i could have a whole set of alloys done in about quarter of an hour! :D

The colours not close enough to use for a repeair but assumgin you're going to strip the whole lot down and start again they'll all match each other perfectly so there's no problem.

If you want i can finish this set of "spare" wheels for you and then swap them for yours (with a rebate coming my way ;))

My fronts are now ruined after that track day, all the brake dust has eaten into the paint :S The paint has bubbled in a couple of areas too, think they got a bit too hot! Will probably go for a mental colour in the spring when it warms up.

Definitely diy it though, gives you a great feeling when you have done them all yourself! For the corrosion I just took that back to bare metal, and etch primed it. The other areas I just keyed the paint, all blended in nicely, and you wouldn't notice
