ERRATIC TEMPRETURE GAUGE

Featured Replies

HI, CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE WITH REGARDS TO MY VRS.

I HAVE BEEN USING IT THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS AND THE TEMPRETURE GAUGE , KEEPS APPEARING TO BE DROPING AND COMING BACK .

AT FIRST I THOUGHT I IMAGINED IT!!!!!!, BUT I CLEARLY WATCHED IT EARLIER .

NOT SURE IF IT COULD BE TEMP SENSOR OR THERMOSTAT ?

HAVE REPLACED THE EXPANSION BOTTLE A LITTLE WHILE AGO, NO WARNING LIGHTS ON DASH .

IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS I WOULD APPRICATE THE ADVICE .

Wow I was just searching for something like this then spotted this whilst going into Fabia section

I have the same, temp went up to approx 75 degrees, i got caught in traffic and it went down to 50 degrees

I have topped up the coolant, and have no undertray if this helps, Im guessing the thermostat has failed open, but am happy to receive other peoples thoughts ?

Have you changed the heat settings inside - i.e. climate control or whatever it's called?

My brothers MkIV GT TDi and my Fabia TDI do this when you increase the heat into the car, the engine temp drops. The needle on the dash is dampened so it doesn't move all the time, but with the Torque android app I can see my temp drops when I put the heating on, and rises when it's off.

Also, if you drive fast enough, the cold air getting to the engine can cool it down. My bros 330 sport used to do that at 70mph+. (At 145mph it read 50 degrees, but when he slowed down it went back to 90).

Good shout Ill run the torque app tomoz to troubleshoot (forgot i had it  )

I found in colder temperatures if you set off with the heater and fan on maximum the car will not get up to temperature during the journey. Gets very warm in the car though.

My Golf did this - new thermostat fixed it.

On the radiator, are both feed/return pipes hot, or is one cold?

is there a guide on stat replacement Ive been searching for a good hour now ?

I don't think I found one, but I had a Golf so slightly different layout anyway.

It was pretty simple in theory, but someone at VAG thoughtfully obstructed one of of the screws with a large lump of metal which meant it took ages to get the 'stat out. One word of caution - I got mine from ECP originally, and it leaked everywhere (costing me all my brand new coolant). Go to VW/Skoda for the sake of a few £, save yourself the pain of doing it twice!

coolant temp sensor may be playing up get it scanned see if it comes up with a fault

I ran torque app on the journey into work today and found the car flew up to 40 degrees, then the temp rose slower after a mile or so, it then slowly began to creep up a degree at a time time settling at 63 degrees when I arrived at work (4 miles nearly) it sat and waited a minute and it slowly fell back to 61

I guess its cooling quicker than heating up

63 on torque app measured 75 on guage though ?

That sounds about right when the air temp is very low.

If it gets up to 90 on the gauge, then suddenly drops off to 0, change the coolant temp sensor.

About £30 for a genuine one from a dealer.

Yeah I noticed that with my torque app - the needle on the dash is dampened so it doesn't move around all the time. That could explain why it was at 75 but Torque had 63. Either that or a faulty temp sensor.

I've got a Volvo 'stat in mine (don't ask - fools at ECP!!!), seems to warm up a little faster but the could be because it's a newer one! They all do the same thing in the end!
