  • Easily see 40 mpg. Unless you use sport mode at every roundabout like I do lol It'll do less in traffic but expect an average of 38-42 on tht sort of run.

How the hell do you guys get this kind of MPG return. I don't have a particularly heavy foot.... ( only on occasions ) and I'm getting 25MPG (30 MPG Best average). The only thing I have mine poor ret

  • I don't know either. Two possibilities. I either drive in a fuel consuming way or car is faulty/not loosened up yet. However, Semka above drove one with almost the same mileage and was getting 40mpg.

I'm stunned by some of the claims on here I did a 300+ mile trip last weekend, on wet roads mostly so didnt hammer it the MFD recorded 35.9mpg I had it (D) drive with just two adults in it

The best ive seen so far in 3000 miles is 38mpg

Update

Did exactly the same journey on Sat , two adults again and we had a higher average speed since the journey took less time

But this time we took the 170 CR Superb and we averaged 50.1mpg

That's a difference of 14mpg! Which works out to around an extra £14 in fuel

Rich, I took time to do some clacs. I was looking at small diesel Superb and 1.8TDSG petrol one. Price difference at Letchworth Progress Skoda was around £4k (petrol cheaper of course). It would take me 13 years to burn that difference in fule cost difference. Petrol is only going to increase its price difference to Diesel in the future.

Superb Estate 1.8TSi S DSG -£18,190

Superb Estate 2.0 TDi CR 140 S DSG - £22,065

I will be thinking about purchasing one next year, what do you think?

EDIT: I do low mileage (circa 9k/year) and travel perhaps twice a year 2k miles return trips.

Took a demo VRS for a second test drive today:

The car 2200 miles on the clock, so i suspect the engine has loosened up a little.

The outside temp was 2c and it was raining. I did 24miles in total, mostly cruising at 65ish on a dual carriageway with a couple of roundabouts, a few bursts of power to overtake and get up to speed and a little bit of traffic in the 40mph zone, overall very similar to how I would normally drive, stayed in D for the whole drive due to weather conditions and the trip average was 41.2 mpg which I am quite happy with and suspect with Cruise control fitted would be even better.

With the price of fuel at the moment I believe I shouldn't cost me more than £50 a month compared to my Mk1 Vrs.

Think I'm going to go for it, just need to have a think weather to go for the brand new or have the Demo car I drove today in January.

The only other car I can suggest that will be fun and frugal would be the Fabia Monte Carlo 105 TDI and the Ibiza FR 140 TDI.

Petrol is slightly more fun though and you get an awesome noise! :)

I thought they'd stopped doing the 1.8 in the Superb but yes for lower mileage the petrol still wins over but filling up,the diesel Superb and getting a range displayed of 550 miles is cool , we have done over 50,000 miles in three years in ours

I can't understand why you can't manage better mpg in the vRS... traffic can be painful and add to worsening mpg.

I don't know either. Two possibilities. I either drive in a fuel consuming way or car is faulty/not loosened up yet.

However, Semka above drove one with almost the same mileage and was getting 40mpg... I am yet to get above 38 mpg.

I will try driving like a coffin dodger with chronic driving phobia later on today on my way to the gym and see what mpg I can get on that circa 20 miles route...

My first few fill ups were 44, 41 and 34mpg. First two were long 70 mile motorway cruises mostly, the last one was more my short daily commute and around town. All on vpower or sainsbury super. Expecting around 10mpg less than my mk1 on average which I can live with.

A 30 mile trip from a cold start.

Needed to be cold ambient & road surface & nice and steady on the throttle, but not all down hill.

Lights & AC was on.

Last AVG shown is after stopping and engine running for a couple of minutes.

(waiting to dip the oil.)

Do you regularly trigger the 100mph warning?

Not while stationery.!

Handy reminder for other occasions.

(if that giving a bong on the road, it could/can be a good licence loss reminder here.)

george

George, your MPG's are really depressing me! But on the other hand, when my car has 15k mileso n the clock it just might be turning THAT frugal, you never know :)

My mum doesnt get economy like that out of hers and she IS a granny !!

Think the best she has had is 46mpg

I am a Grandad,

there is no mention in the 'Owners manuals' on age of driver required when keeping in the most economic Rev range.

Too slow does not give the best MPG,

its about keeping momentum, it does not even slightly require the likes of Hypermiling,

if you do that, then you can really give good economy.

(while slowly getting towards One Foot in the Grave)

george

My point was to get figures like that you need to drive like a granny

I think George must live on top of the mountain and only gives us his mpg resluts going down :giggle::angel:

My Lupo was doing such mpg's!

To busy paying attention (on the look out) when its doing from 18-22 mpg when fully hot to take pictures.

george

That's more like it! Now I belive you are not being towed all the time ;)

10 mile commute earlier in zero degrees temps and accidentally managed 42mpg. Car has just ticked over 10k

Far to many people here should have bought a diesel lol

^^Second that!

+1. Diesel is the fuel of choice for those people who can't afford petrol lol

From what the OP said, he's ordering a new car. Therefore he can only expect 25-30mpg if he's lucky.

Firstly, he'll be playing about with it (like we all did) and secondly, the engine will have to loosen up.

There's an argument to buy a used VRS with about 20k on the clock. You'll save loads of money on fuel bills ......

Or buy a diesel and join this gang -

I got stuck in a traffic jam yesterday. 8km travelled in nearly an hour. The fuel use reading was 22L/100km, which is about 12.84mpg!

I'm pretty sure I used to get about 15mpg around town in my early 70's model 5.0L V8 Ford Falcon.
