  • Easily see 40 mpg. Unless you use sport mode at every roundabout like I do lol It'll do less in traffic but expect an average of 38-42 on tht sort of run.

How the hell do you guys get this kind of MPG return. I don't have a particularly heavy foot.... ( only on occasions ) and I'm getting 25MPG (30 MPG Best average). The only thing I have mine poor ret

  • I don't know either. Two possibilities. I either drive in a fuel consuming way or car is faulty/not loosened up yet. However, Semka above drove one with almost the same mileage and was getting 40mpg.

My other half does not understand that while we were doing a 100 mile trip during floods, why we used 8 gallons of fuel.

(It took us nearly 6 hours, lots of it trying to keep up revs and the engine ready to move a few feet..)

She still does not see that while we sat 2 hours not moving but keeping the engine running we were achieving 'Zero MPG',

& when we did get some movement, it was about 5-10 miles in a hour we went, so an hour of the engine running.

I can bet you she is not alone!

My diesel has more hp and more torque than my little Fabia

With one car averaging 23mpg, the Fabia averaging 36 i need a diesel as well

I wonder if my one will ever break 40 mpg...

Any chance the ECU has become too adapted to your breaking in driving style??

Could have been... never thought about this one - thing is I stopped doing it after 300 miles and now it is at 2000k...

dont forget economy normally drops by around 3-5mpg during wnter due to the temperatures and fuel additives.

It certainly looks that way as I was getting easy 38 mpg only a month ago...

Ill take it easy on the way home tomorrow from Milton Keynes to Nottingham, ill post up my results. I reckon 42mpg for the journey with this weather.

I must say that you guys are getting very impressive figures for a vRS.

I refuelled my car yesterday and had 30mpg. 50% of the miles i did was on a big road and the other 50% was just cold starts in -5 to -15degrees and just short runs of 5-10miles.

+1. Diesel is the fuel of choice for those people who can't afford petrol lol

In my case it's not that I "cant afford petrol" its weather I want to afford petrol lol

From what the OP said, he's ordering a new car. Therefore he can only expect 25-30mpg if he's lucky.

Firstly, he'll be playing about with it (like we all did) and secondly, the engine will have to loosen up.

There's an argument to buy a used VRS with about 20k on the clock. You'll save loads of money on fuel bills ......

Or buy a diesel and join this gang -

I am actually thinking of may be going for the demo car I test drove the other day, prefect colour etc and will have 3K ish on the clock when it goes on sale.

P.s This is turning into quite a "HOT" thread!

Can we assume you enjoyed driving it, DSG & all?

Did the salesman let you out alone?

george

The fuel mpg will now fall like a stone, its cold so winter fuel is here and has been for a wee while, I noticed today I've just filled up to the brim with vpower diesel of course ;) , and my mpg average has gone down by at least 10-15 miles per gallon, roll on the bloody spring

george

I have enjoyed it, found the DSG quite relaxing when cruising.

He did let me out alone which I was surprised by as I looked at a couple of cars recently and they all seem to usually insist on coming which puts me off and I cant concentrate on how the car drives when they keep going on lol, this salesman Barry is very relaxed and knows me as my Dad got Monte of him 8 month ago.

So overall very pleased, just waiting to hear from a mortgage adviser on weather I can have both as a house came up which I would like if I can get it lol

seboni121,

is it actually using Winter Diesel (anti waxing) that you think reduces MPG?

*From a thread 6 months ago, never trust what comes out a Shell V Power pump as being what you think you are buying.

That was around the Fuel Shortage/strike time,

& there appears to be a Shell Fuel shortage in some areas again.

?? Could you be getting regular Shell Diesel & paying for V Power??

Winter Diesel was never has worse for the mpg for me when i ran diesels.

In the cold days of Heating up slower & the Alternator running more the MPG might drop,

on Warm days with Winter Diesel in the tank, the MPG was the same as Summer time MPGs.

& Winter Petrol certainly does not give poorer MPG IME.

Actually in Winter when its warm days i find an improvement with it.

(likely to be a slight bit higher minimum ron than the minimum ron of summer petrol)

is there such a thing as "winter petrol" ? surely petrol doesn't freeze.....

It comes in different quality to meet cold conditions.

The Minimum RON applies as usual.

The formulation can be better.

You will see different part of Europe with improved Petrol & you will see Southern UK get fuel from European refineries that is just at MInimum RON and some that exceeds it.

We certainly get earlier from Scottish & UK refineries

in the North of England & Scotland sooner than in the South Petrol that suits Winter Running & Storage in Colder weather.

It is about how voltile & hydroscopic the fuel can be when there is condensation between cold and warm conditions.

(H20 in your tank or filter)

Not with an 'Anti Waxing' additive like with diesel, (Diesel is very Hydroscopic & needs the Anti Waxing, to stop the H20 freezing)

The Petrol in winter can be just slightly higher than the Minmum requirements because of the different formulation..

**Less cr4p used in it than the summer fuel gets, to be green/Cheap to manufacture.*

When Super Unleaded first became available it was common for Tuners and racers to buy their Super Unleaded before the 28th of March & store it for Summer Usage. (That was not against Budget rises, there was a notably better performance from the fuel)

Now it does not store as well.

They give the Minimum, but do not give maximums they may achieve.

EDIT

Just the same Momentum spec link as earlier in the thread.

Date of Fuel deliveries of the more Volatile stuff for the colder weather.

I am not a big fan of Ethanol, Biobuthanol - yes please :).

P.S. TESCO link doesn't work.

I'm a huge fan of Ethanol myself!

I think it's incredible anal to worry about fuel qualities month to month, engines need to be hot to be efficient and this takes longer during the winter on the plus side cold dense air makes the most power :)

Cold air, more oxygen & for the same price you are getting a more volatile fuel.

Every day of winter is not cold.

If you are going to a 1/4 mile strip/thrash or such

its good to know what fuel you have.

Slightly better, & since we do not readily or cheaply get 102 ron here. Seems to me a good thing.

(Also good to know that the Winter Formula petrol does not go White & stiky as quick if left in a Carb or tank.

. Bike, car, Lawn Mower etc, That was not meant in a rude way.))

V power comes from one UK refinery and is only one 'recipe' winter or summer

Does that come from the Horses Mouth, eg Shell?

Good reason to avoid Shell V Power if that is the case.

Or is it that they turn out the good stuff all year?

Does that Fuel then go to other Storage and distribution Depots from the refinery,?

Like nearer for deliveries, by ship.

or do the Shell Tankers running out of Grangemouth carry some other product?

We will be back to the previous threads of, if the Additives go in at the depot.

George I want this Shell V-Power Nitro+ Diesel

Its just gone all nice and warm, wet & windy.

(not just in my house.)

A tail wind should improve the MPG greatly.

george

Just got back from a 30 mile round trip, start in towns and end in towns, averaged 42mpg with a few blasts on roundabouts and dual carriageway!

It can be done!
