Octavia 1.9 TDI 4x4 surprisingly expensive to insure....

Featured Replies

Any body found the 4x4 variant surprisingly more expensive to insure than they expected.Just shopping around for new insurance for the Octy 1.9 TDI 4x4 I bought back in August, pretty surprised at the quotes/renewal.

It has nearly trebled compared to my MKI 110 TDI estate and is coming out about £100 more than my other car. The other car (Z4) has more than double the HP, RWD, group 19 (octy is 8) and is worth more too.

And this is before I want to increase the anual mileage and consider a future remap........pants.

Just found the complete opposite, £30 to swap from a 110 mkI TDi to a 2L mkII 4x4 and that included a £15 admin fee!

Bloke at Chris Knott said the increase was due to the fact that the 4x4 was newer.

If you're of a certain age have you tried Saga? they were cheaper than most of other on the comparison websites (other than companies I'd never heard of) for both the old gal's Seat 1.9PD TDI and my 1.4TSI Octy. They were only another £48 pa on a pro rata basis when I changed to the vRS in October too which really surprised me.

I expected it to be a little more just because as you say it is a few years newer than my MK1 was. I'm going to give Chris Knott a ring tomo and see what they say.

I'm only 32 so a few years off Saga qualification.

I've been with admiral for 3 years and always found them the best for me, really didn't expect it to go from £170 to £380, especially when the Z4 which is on the same policy has come down to under £300 for the 1st time.

I always spend a few hours phoning round different companies come renewal time as you can almost guarantee that your current insurer will try to charge you over the odds as many people just accept the renewal cost without shopping around.

Even a quick check through one of the comparison sites shows my current insurer online for almost £90 cheaper than their quote on the renewal pack that they sent. I had to ring them last year about this but they are trying it on again (that said, the AA/RAC do the same for breakdown cover each year and can be beaten back down on price with one phone call).

That said, for me although not the cheapest, I have to admit to being impressed with the cover and price offered by Skoda Insurance and may well be going with them in a few weeks.

Try LV - they were one of the cheapest for our Scout.

My BMW was also cheaper but i was told that if you have a claim and the car has to be fixed, BMW can overnight parts ect from Germany if required so the length of time to fix the car at an approved dealer would be less meaning that you would have a courtesy car less, costing the insurance company less.

Dont know how true it is but just one of this things i have heard through brokers.

I would also suggest calling Cheaper Car Insurance, saved me over £200, call then on: 0800 161 3050

I was with admiral for my vrs but they was nearly £200 more expensive then the lowest quote this year despite the fact that i am an advanced driver. Ended up joining the IAM & went through there insurance for £250 fully comp

I think the price rise is nothing to do with the car and more to do with Admiral's financial position. They wacked £450 on the annual premium for our 2 Octavias this year, no change in circumstances and they couldn't explain why. Needless to say we went elsewhere, pity as they had been very good on price for two years and their service was very good when dealling with a no fault claim.

Don't dispel SAGA because of your age, I've been with them a few times and found them very competitive ( and prepared to negotiate a bit on price) with very good policies.

Try Sky (above) or even Skoda Insurance, who I'm with. (Mostly because other insurers couldn't find an Octavia 1.6 TDI 4x4 estate on their databases and wouldn't quote on a model which "didn't exist" :dull: )

Admiral have massively increased their price for my wife's car (Renault espace) this year. No changes just a 30% rise in premium. Bit of shopping around going on now!

Well, spent allot of the day on the phone and have managed to find quotes for what I wanted. I have added the GF to the octavia and have managed to cut the policy down to under £300 rather than over £430. Still nearly Double the old octy but better than I had feared. That was with Chaucer Direct who seem to get good reviews but any future remap is looking like a no-no.

Priviledge have quoted about £330 for the BMW so I'm looking at about £630 for both cars for the year so not too bad really.

I have been with Admiral for 3 years and they have been excellent but their prices to look to be on the up. I was worried about my no claims as I have 9 years mirrored across both cars with multicar from one policy. Admiral have said I can take 9 years from the original policy but also 3 years I have earned on my second car. I was worried I may not get a 2nd NCD.

I'm still going to give Sky and a couple of others a call re the possibility of a map in the next few months. The 1.9 TDI 4x4 really could do with a little more punch compared with the old 110 TDI Mk1. Keep getting caught out on long hills. Interestingly though, due to the gearing the 4x4 struggles much less than the old octy when it has a big trailer on the back.

Mark.

Well, in the end I've ditched the idea of a map. Managed to get covered for only £205 which is a total result and about £40 more than the old Octy I.

With a Shark Stage 1 map and trying the usual suspects, Sky, Flux and Chaucer etc I was looking at £520 with a map from 105 to 140 HP.
