Arrggghhhh frozen fuel flap

Featured Replies

Came out to work at 6 this morning, and can't go full the car up cos the fuel flap is frozen shut.

It's currently still -4

Have tried a bit of de-icer around the seals, but still couldn't open it.

I've got 145 miles left on the range, so fingers crossed it warms up before I run out!!

I guess if it comes to it, and you're at a petrol station with a coffee machine, get a hot cup of coffee and water it down a bit with some water so it's not burning hot and tip that over the area around the flap - should help thaw it quickly!

this happened to me i just poured a jug of tap hot water over the flap and it loosened up.

Make your hands cold by holding them against it.

If really desperate you could even *** on it.

I saw a guy use his lighter at a petrol station to do the same thing...I drove away very quickly in the opposite direction...

The stupid are protected so presume he is still alive lol

You could end up (sorry) with worse than a frozen fuel flap.

If you can get something thin like a piece of plastic bottle behind it then it will open up with a little movement.

It's not actually the flap frozen shut, but the plastic that covers the little spring that's hard when cold and so won't pop the cap open.

Carefully open it as above, taking care to use no force and not to damage it. Once it's open apply silicon grease (not silicon sealant) to all of the rubber bits, to prevent freezing and rub it in. Then make sure you rub some onto the spring cover and exercise it with the grease on it, by pressing it in and out.

Rub it in, exercise it a little bit more and then put a last light coat on it and leave it for a few minutes with the flap open.

Rub any excess off and close the fuel cap.

You should be good to go at that point and won't find it sticking again unless it gets particularly cold.

mines the same every morning i leave mine slighty open at night happy days

Until you come out one morning and find someone has syphoned the fuel out of your tank...

Don't they have anti siphon tanks?

Cheers for advice lads, I managed to get into it by dinnertime.

I used an old shop card to go round the edge and then pry it open.

Or a switched on diesel owner :D

Fill a plastic bag with hot water and hold it against the car. Should help thaw anything.

or just rest your :moon: on it for a few minutes

Our boot was frozen shut yesterday morning. Once heated up inside it opened... Still need to re-attach part of the passenger door seal where the froze shut last year and when I managed to open it it left part of the seal on the door frame!

Pictures or it didn't happen!
