Just taking the Furby to trade it in...

Featured Replies

... for a horrid thing that the missus wants.

It really feels like taking the family dog to the vet for the final time. And not because he's old, blind, inconintent, arthritic and has no quality of life, but because one member of the family would like a different dog because she's seen one on the telly and it's fashionable.

The full of life member of the family that you've come to love and cherish is going because, well, "I never really liked that colour".

So the Furby is taking that final journey to be replaced by a Mitsubishi M-LCC [1]. I'm going to miss it. The only saving grace is that the scrappage scheme is no longer in place so it'll go to a new home and be loved once more.

Just pulled into a service station just outside Telford, and the Furby's started to idle roughly. It's as if it knows.

Driving home in the Furby.

Well, sort of driving home. More stuttering than driving.

Suspect coil, garage worried that it's the head.

Fault code 17811 suggests that it's the EGR.

And the windscreen washer and the nsf electric window packed up today too.

Methinks the Furby doesn't want to go...

Keep it!

Well, we would, but she's had it for 6 years and fancies a change. And as it's her car, she's chosen what she wants, so that's fair enough.

Of course of anyone wanted to match the trade in to keep it in the Briskoda family, I'm sure the garage would be content with me paying cash for the MLCC :D

Apparently the gearbox mount has definitely exited stage left, but beyond that it's speculation at this stage.

Speculation includes EGR (clean or replace), cracked head (seen a lot of these apparently), cam chain tensioner has let chain jump a tooth (seen a lot of these apparently).

Awaiting news...

Around 2003 Skoda revised the head on the 1.2's as they had a design flaw, the only thing i'd be worried about is when the head comes off what state are the valves/seals in as it's also known to be a weak spot.

Well, having had the car for the day, they've sorted the exhaust mount and put some cleaner into the EGR.

Tomorrow they'll see if that's sorted it, but I think I'll ask them to do a compression check as a matter of course.

I'm working on the basis that the head will only come off if it's down on compression, and if the head's had it, the valves & seals will get sorted as part of the refurb.

Well, it's up early tomorrow to take Herbie the Furby to Faintree Skoda to be traded in for Eddie the Colt CZC. All sorted and working, but then I thought that was the case last week and it didn't quite work out.

Anyway, I've got my balaclava ready for the trip home so no one will recognise me. I'm tempted to get an "anonymous" mask.

That's the sort of thing but I'm thinking a little more Arab Spring Chic.

Well as I keep having to tell myself, it's her car not mine so it's not important that I like it.

The other thing, is that without her skewed view of what is attractive and what isn't, I'd probably still be single :)

See, totally comfortable in it...

Sod that mate, assuming that "she" is expecting you to have some level of understanding of said car if it goes wrong (as cars do),

then my argument would be...Skoda...like it or lump it missus, its a model that I understand and is fairly simple to maintain.

Anything else and if it goes wrong then its all on you, sort it yourself. Sure that would go down well.

Do they even have a forum for owners of Mitsu...oh I'm not even gonna bother to type all that out

As a plus assuming they have one then you can probably go to the same forum for washing machine parts too

I'd also go for Seat/VW of course because they are very much the same car, although Skoda seems to be the cheapest of the three.

What is this model by the way ? Even Mitsu don't appear to have heard of it, not a good start I would say....

Personally, I'd imagine it to be more reliable than most things VAG make. . . It's not like the Japs are known for poor reliability it?

Personally, they're not my favorite car, but there's defiantly worse looking things out there (although the CC is a bit. . . .worse)

See, I said that as I'd be fixing it, we weren't having anything French.

Japanese it was. Boring. A bit plasticy. Reliable.

Imagine my delight when I discovered that everything back from the dash and above the floor was designed, manufactured and built in

Turin.

Yep, the power hood and all the tricky electrics and seals to keep the water out are Italian. Bloody marvellous.

blimey. You'll be expecting her to pump her own petrol next and that would never do!
