felicia tdi

Featured Replies

hiya peeps

am looking at getting a very cheap run around, 1.9diesel felicia 1998 estate, can anyone tell me what is there to look for, is this a vw based engine, is it chipable, i believe it bout 65bhp and maybe around 55mpg

many thanks in advance

TDi?, the Felicia diesel doesn't have a turbo. It'll be engine code AEF and they're quite durable, if not agricultural. They're supposed to have an oil change every 5000 miles but most people do them every 10000 miles, they have a cam belt. Glow plugs can fail, also the glow plug fuse can crack, injector leak off pipes can leak, all quite minor stuff.

I don't think that they're chippable as they don't use a complicated ECU.

You are right, they are basically the same engine as found in many other VAG cars.

As above. Naturally aspirated diesel. Realiable but not fast.

Not much can be done in terms of tuning as they have no turbo and the injection is controlled by the pump not an ECU.

many thanks

it just gonna be a plodder for me

More of a tractor than a car, but as hardy as you like! Just clocked over 110,000 miles on mine and not so much of a hiccup from the engine. New battery and glowplugs fitted and even in these Polar conditions, she starts and runs beautifully. But then, there's nothing fancy on them to go wrong. Currently return about 44-48MPG mixed driving, with a bit of hard driving occasionally - which is fair enough for an engine designed around 25 years ago now and not THAT much worse than a modern engine of equivalent size.

True, they are slow, but if you fancy flying about you can work the gears just a bit and it turns out to be quite fun around town really.

Look after it and it'll look after you.
