Wheel alignment woes

Featured Replies

Had the winter tyres/dics on for 1 month and car felt a bit wobbly. So went to the tyre place and had the wheels balanced...just did a motorway journey and car feels three times as bad...from 90kph upwards and most noticably from 115kph-130kph. Steering wheel rattles, gas pedal rattles, phone in cup holder rattles.

So, is the geometry in need of doing or has the wheel balancing been done badly? The guys at the tyre place said the alloys needed up to 60g to get them in balance, which seems a lot, no? Bearing in mind though the car wobbled before...now it seems to 'float' at times and seems very unsteady.

What do you guys advise or suggest I do? How much would geometry cost?

60g is a lot for wheels and tyres nowadays balancing is best done by a GSP9700 balancer, recomend you search on line for the nearest tyre experts who use this machine. My dealer fitted new tyres had over 60grms on some wheels when rebalanced on a GSP9700 machine the maximum needed was 20grams and the positions were way out.

Did you have any problems before fitting the winter tyres?

What is the maximum speed for your make of winter tyres ?

I think you are going to find your are driving way over winter tyre speed limits for safety.

Will PM you details of this type of machine.

Hi, thanks for PM, I went back to the tyre place today and they did a re-balance straight off and confirmed the balance was out. Not sure why it was off, but they were very helpful and as expected it was free. I have no idea what type of machine it was, but it was supposedly brand new as the tyre place is newly opened and it's part of a big chain over here in Slovakia (Mikona).

Tyres are rated 91H, which are rated for 210kmh (i think). Load wise they are suitable as well...I checked with Skoda dealer a few weeks ago and also asked these guys as well for a second opinion. 130kmh is not fast at all (speed limit on motorway over here), only around 80mph. Obviously I don't drive that fast on icy or snowy roads :)

If the car had a wobble before then out of balance wheels wont help.
