Scratched windows on vrs 2012

Featured Replies

Hello all. I have had my vrs for 3 months now and noticed that the windows are badly scratched! It's probably from using the ice scraper that the missus gave me!!! Has anyone got any ideas to get the scratches out? I have been to auto glass who said they couldn't do anything and would replace the windows. My local Skoda dealer in Leicester wasn't helpful and said they had never seen it before! The windows that are scratched are the front and two side windows! Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum.

Sadly it does sound like the scraper, and its why i never ever use one.

Afraid its a lesson learned.

I have over the years had to replace windows on plenty of second hand cars bought that originate in Scotland

& had to replace my sons VW Passat windscreen earlier this year from him going at it with a scraper after always being told by me not to..

Kia & Hyundiai are really bad for tint on the outside of the glass & soft glass that scratches easily.

It looks like the vRS might be the same.

Thats why I avoid Ice scrapers. If you can feel the scratches with your fingernail then the only fix is glass replacement, if they are just surface scratches a glass cutting compound may work but could make it a whole lot worse if you are unsure about application.

Depends how deep the scratches are, but a clay bar, a polish or even (if you're brave) the very softest kind of steel wool might help.

I am waiting to replace my windscreen on the vRS for the second time.

(hoping for a nice stone chip & just the £60 excess with the insurance. 'Joking there obviously')

Where it sits parked, it sometimes get blasted with fine sand from a nearby quarry,

in the sunlight the tiny particles missing from the outer tint makes it look like a starlit sky.

Sadly you will not polish the marks from the outside.

Might look OK from outside untill you get in the car & look out. JME obviously.

Jewelers Rouge Powder etc, a waste of time IMO

Worth a try tho, since the glass is already spoiled,

go to the least annoying/obvious bit to start with..

PS

I did help in replacing Glass for a nice Pole Dancer that cleaned lightly her Customised Lexus (Toyota) with some steel wool

or such. Bathroom Cleaner i think it actually was.

(She was not from Poland.)

Thank you for your advice. It's just very annoying when you see the scratches as I take pride in it! I have brought some jewellers rouge to give a bash as its worth a shot even if it makes it worse. I used scrapers on my old cars and never had a problem with it!! Ill see how the jewellers rouge gets on and ill update you all. My lesson has now been learnt!!

Afrer a very very quick search at the web these came up

Please keep in mind that I do not know any of the above products and I do not promote them, just give you an idea of what is out there on glass scratch removal. Also I do never had issues like you do, but if I was in your position I would try one of the above before replacing the glass or glasses.

And when I get ice on my car's glasses I always use a bottle of cheap blue alcohol from pharmacy store or super market.

could be worth a little more research into the durability of the glass Skoda uses in its latest cars when they have as standard " an ice scraper " supplied with the new Rapide !!!

Hmm, so what's a skoda-glass friendly alternative then? I've always found a credit card the most effective for scraping hard frost, but does make your hands cold!

Did the same on my MkIV GTI when it was less than a month old - very annoying. Have not used a scraper since.

The best alternative is Autoglym de-icer. Excellent stuff and no damage to paintwork, worked even in the Artic winters of a few years ago.

I can't report it from phone, either through tapatalk or using the actual browser.

Shouldn't you be safe if you just avoid metal scrapers? I use one of plastic.

One good rule is to always push forward with the scraper, never backwards. If you pull it backwards, sand/small stones can be trapped between the scraper and the windscreen - which will scratch the windscreen.
