1.8 TSI Shuddering

Featured Replies

Has anybody got any experience of engine with a flat spot at about 1800 - 2200 rpm with a petrol turbo - its not misfiring, just not picking up cleanly.

My Fabia vrs 1.9 diesel suffered from this at 2000 rpm and there was a Briskoda fix that involved drilling out an orifice plate that was part of the turbo air management plumbing.

I know 1800 rpm sounds very low to expect a petrol engine to pull, but the torque curve shows that it should be allright at this speed, and the flat spot isn't flooring it, just normal pulling away.

Thanks,

Herbie

My 1.8TSi pulls smooth and strong from 1200 all the way to the red line.

Mine does the same. Not exactly sure of revs but since I got the car I have felt something not quite right, a kind of hesitation. A bit annoying and will certainly mention it when it goes for service. Have come from Mk6 GTI that was so smooth so perhaps been spoilt a bit but can't help feel it shouldn't be like it is.

Mine stutters at 2000rpm in 2nd or 3rd if I'm for example accelerating off a roundabout. I'd assumed it was probably a valve opening or something but have no idea what it is really. I haven't investigated it, just modified my driving style to avoid it...

Do you guys ever have the situation that you almost feel like you are going to stall when accelerating hard from standstill, when joining busy roundabout for example? Difficult to get revs right and it kind of lurches forward then picks up?

Can't say that I it feels like it's going to stall. More often I get lots of wheelspin and a yellow flashing light on the dash!

Occasionally, yes.

I find it took a while to learn just the right amount of throttle to use for pulling away. A little too much and it takes off like a rocket, too little and it might stall - same as anything really but more sensitive than usual.

Yep! Mine's like that too - especially when the road is damp.

I guess mine is helped by the DSG but it is just totally responsive everywhere in the rev range. No flat spots just smooth acceleration whether hard, medium or gentle and a wonderful building surge of power/torque as it reaches 4000rpm.

This is without doubt the best engine I have ever driven - I just love it!

It appears that the 1.8 does kangaroo occasionally , a remap cures this little gremlin

Not sure i can justify (by that I mean get permission for...!) a remap but good to know it's probably a characteristic of the car and seemingly not something to worry about. Would love to have had DSG again but beggars can't be choosers and overall think it's a very good car for the money i paid.

Would a remap to do that (and only that) affect insurance?

And roughly what kind of costs are involved?

Mine doesn't have a flat spot and pulls very smoothly throughout the rev range.

Seems some do and an equal number don't, is yours DSG and/or remapped? What age is it? I sometimes wonder if mine is worse when cold? Hoping after service in March it will be better.....

Mine is a manual 1.8TSI 4X4 Estate manufactured November 2010. It has not been remapped and has done 16305 miles.

I have a 2009 1.8 Tsi with 75k on the clock... I say once in 20 pulling away it does it , and even then its not major just a tad annoying

I had a Bluefin remap which totally eliminated it, however I took the remap off due to the fact the car was too fast for me!

seems to be if you are trying to pull away gently around 1500 revs, any less or more you don`t seem to get it

I just rev the damn thing now lol!

Ladies & Gents,

Many thanks for this - its nice to know its not just my TSI that does this. I think its now down to getting a to know the balance between throttle and clutch when pulling off, and if that doesn't work, then a re-map.

Cheers,

Herbie

I have previously owned x2 1.8 TSi's (1 2WD and 1 4WD) and can't say I noticed any flat spots. This engine is the sweet spot in the range, reasonably economical, quick, quiet and decent "diesel like" low rev torque.

I'm currently driving the older 1.8T 20V engine and the newer TSi unit is a vast improvement in every area. It's also around 10% more fuel efficient (2010 1.8 TSi 4x4: http://www.fuelly.co...panther/octavia / 2002 1.8T 20V 4x4: http://www.fuelly.co...nther/octavia-2)

Currently regretting not looking harder for a 1.8 TSi Yeti. The current 2WD TDi is OK, but I can't help feeling the car would be a much better long term proposition with the 1.8 TSi engine.
