My first service

Featured Replies

Its not my montes first service but will possibly be my first trip to the dealers.

Prior to this i have had older cars and me and bro (a trained Mercedes HGV tech) have done it.

1) he has the skills 2) i work in the parts trade so either could get trade discount on genuine bits or have a contact in factors who could do a real good price.

My main questions are

1) will i be able to barter for discounts on labour or parts (as if the dealer cant do discounted parts TPS will as we run a VW Crafter/Caddy at work)

2) Oil. I have the impression that my local dealer used Quantum but id rather have Castrol. Whats your thoughts on on Quantum.

3) Additional's i want to see if its possible to activated auto locking and cornering lights if possible, am i likely to have to pay extra for this.

I have a couple of warranty issue im not sure wether to bring up now or later on.

1 is the passenger door speaker can sound distorted at higher levels where the others are fine.

2. The lower seat bulster on drivers by the door seems to going soft, ive seen this mentioned my concern is replacing this now and damaging this again later on, or should i just get it done.

(This is a 2011 Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2 86

1 no ? If its the dealer

2 quantum oil is alleged to be castrol under another name ? Not sure this is true though

3 no the dealer should ask you how you require the doors to open, mine did and no charge

Ive heard rumours quantum is "reclamied" oil.

Well if not i may enquire to how much the labour is and supply my own parts.

As im not prepared to pay more if i dont have to. Same with the oil.

Had Auto Lock and Auto Unlock enabled the other day at the supplying dealers free of charge. Don't think they will be able to enable corner fog though, as the standard Skoda diagnostics kit is not on par with the Ross Tech for such things, from my own experience.

Have the three year service package with ours as we took the skoda finance, so it will be down to the dealer to throw whatever into the motor but like yourself I would prefer a proper Castrol product.

If Quantum is " reclaimed" then it's been done well, since it's got the VAG 504.00 standard, like the Castrol has.

Also,I notice the 1 litre pack of Castrol supplied with my new vRS bears the legend "Longlife III"...which is exactly what the Quantum stuff has always been called.

I thought Quantum was 'THE' VW/Skoda recommended oil. I do most maintenance myself and have found some dealer prices on Quantum fairly reasonable. Sometimes you get a better deal on take away oil by shopping around between VW / Skoda / Seat dealers.

You are perfectly entitled to supply your own oil when taking car in to dealers either to save money or because you want a particular Make of oil that the dealer doesn't stock. Ensure that the pack of oil is new and unopened because that way the dealer will know that what is ON the pack is actually IN the pack!

Might as well get any warranty issues done as they arise, I had one or two minor issues sorted by the supplying dealer on my two year old Fabia2 and for the past couple of years have only had 'routine maintenance' to do. Very satisfactory. And 42 MPG!
