Low revs and stalling T reg Felicia 1.6 petrol

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Well our Felicia we bought as a stop gap car while our campervan was being resprayed is still with us and being used regular!

Its developed a slight problem though, when braking and coming to a stop the revs drop really low and most of the time so low that the car stalls. It starts up straight away again but when i stop again, the same thing happens. The revs are also very low sometimes (almost at stalling point) but if i press the accelerator pedal the revs go up and then drop back down to where they should be (around 850rmp on the rev counter).

Any ideas on this?? A sensor needs replacing? Fuel problem?? Driving along is fine its just when slowing down to stop or when you actually stop that it happens.

Any help appreciated!

I would start by cleaning the throttle body and then resetting it.

being a newbie to skoda etc, how do i reset the throttle body?? do i have to have a handheld or laptop plugged into it? :)

Hi ya, have had similar with some of my past Fellys. The throttle body can be a common culprit so is worth the attention to start with. If you search on the forum you'll find different pieces of advice relating to re-setting but be warned views do conflict!

Will give it a go cleaning etc and post here what happens...if i can get away from wrapping xmas presents for a few minutes! lol!

You can reset the throttle body with vagcom and a laptop but it can also be done by disconnecting the battery. Disconnect the battery for an hour then reconnect it, turn the key in the ignition so the lights/symbols come on but dont start the car, leave it like that for around 20seconds (you should hear the throttle body wurring as it resets) then turn the key again to start the car. Reset it after you clean it not before.

Thanks for that, will have to rip it apart and clean it thoroughly then reset it and see if that helps. Anything else these symptoms could be if this doesn't help? Car is over 110k, it is due a service about now so will probably do that too. :)

With the car being a cheap runabout while we work on our campervan, the idea is to spend as little money as possible on it. Its just passed an mot without much problems. :)

^ I reckon there's a fair chance the throttle body & re-align will do the trick. When you re-connect & engage the ignition to on, make sure you leave enough time (up to around 30 secs) before actually starting. Give us a shout if it doesn't help & we'll consider a plan b ;)

Hi guys!

Well its been a while and the car did go through a phase of not stalling etc but as its started doing it again i thought i'd try the reset thing. Also changed the plugs, leads, dizzy cap etc as there was a misfire.

After doing the reset, the car now idles at about 250rpm and sort of revs itself constantly between the 250 and 500rpm mark, almost stalling. When i drive the car its fine until i slow down or have to press the clutch to change gear. As you change gear obviously when you press the clutch the revs will drop but mine drop and stall if i'm changing gear while going slowly like round a corner etc or coming to a stop at lights.

Anything else this could be??? Don't wanna spend lots of cash on it as its going in a few months.

HELP!!!!

Read this post thoroughly:

And this post

I would bet on ignition coil. Try borrowing one to check.

Thanks for the replies all!!

Just for now i've sorted it temporarily! I've tightened the accelerator cable slightly so the revs idle at about 950-1000rpm. Drives perfect now and doesn't stall at all when coming to a stop! Not ideal but will do for now...On motorway yesterday she was misfiring every so often too....all plugs leads and dizzy cap etc have just been replaced so guess the next would be the coil itself??

Like i say, this is just a stop gap car while our surf bus is having a rebuild so don't really wanna spend anything on it if i can get away with it.

:)

have you had vag com on it for faults

Hi all,

Well, the coil packed up completely on us while out and about! Wouldn't start at all! Managed to get a new one from a nearby parts shop and the car started first time and now runs again!

However, even after a throttle body reset, if i loosen the accelerator cable back to how it should be, the revs still dip too low when i come to a stop and the car stalls again?! Other than that its running just fine but the cable has to be tightened enough so that at idle the revs sit on 1000rpm which is slightly too high?!

Any sensors etc which could be causing this? There is a hole in the exhaust just after the cat...could this cause it?! Not got vag com but got a hand held scanner which shows no codes stored! There is no warning lights on and everything seems to run ok.

any ideas?

Markus :)

the only sensors this engine has is a temp sensor maf/map sensor lamba sensor throttle prosision sensor in throttle body

There is a single ended stepper motor inside the throttle body which controls the idle speed, it only operates when the idle contact switch is closed, it's not uncommon for the motor to break and/or reach its adaption limit due a dirty fouled up throttle plate.. If you artificially keep the throttle open so that the idle switch is open it won't operate the idle motor but there is sufficient air flow through the throttle body to maintain a good idle..

if it is bust then just get a second hand one from a breakers yard, you only need a 5mm long Allen key to get it off, quite a lot of vag group cars use the same throttle body so it should be easy to find, 1.0 1.4 1.6 polos circa 1995-2000 use them but do check the part number is the same

the other thing I've done in the past when I've been desperate to keep a car going and also totally skint is just drill a few small holes in the throttle plate, not recommended as a long term fix though.

The other prospect would seem to be that this car's rev counter is over-reading.
