Air/Con (manual) coming on, feature or fault?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a quickie, (can't be arsed to get the manual out if I'm honest) have noticed since new that the air/con seemed to come on at random, noticed today that it is coming on when you turn it towards the screen from either the Face/Feet position or the Face only position, is it meant to do this to clear the screen or not?

Thank you, and I do apologise for not getting the manual out but the weather is awful and it's been a long day already!!

Happy Xmas all :-)

It comes on when you select windscreen, with the fans running. It is supposed to do it.

Yes air-con should come on for screen demist; helps reduce moisture in the car as I understand it.

When my A/C is switched off it does not come on at random,

it does not come on anytime without being switched on,

no matter if that is Demist on the Windows with fans running.

I have my setting at Screen or Screen & face all the time,

& select A/C if i want it on to assist with Demisting, then off again afterwards.

thats on a vRS with Climatic Control Air Conditioning.

EDIT PS

I never have 'AUTO' switched on. if it is on, the A/C will come on at random.

Thanks everyone, mine is manual air/con in the vRS and I couldn't understand why sometimes it would come on without me pressing the button, until today when I noticed it came on when turning it towards the screen from either of the other directions.

My Monte has Climate and that only operates when selected.

Many thanks again!

I run the aircon all the time (temp sensors will turn it off if its too cold out, at 3 C I believe, to protect the system) its the best way to keep it in good condition... as someone else also said, it dries the air, and thus prevents misting up.

I've always done this, and never had to regass aircon, or deal with bacteria in the system...

last car for example, grande punto, from 0 - 110,000 miles, aircon on all the time, still as ice cold after 4 years as it always was :)

It comes on when you put it on windscreen only and then once on as far as I know it stays on until you turn it off, maybe wrong though !

Don't talk such nonsense, it's not random on auto it merely maintains the selected temperature by balancing the ambient temperature of the vehicle, sometimes that does involve the fan coming on in what may seem like a random fashion. If it's not on auto it keeps pumping air of the selected temperature in, usually until you suffer heat exhaustion!

Directing the flow to the windscreen will cause the fans to come on at full to clear the screen.

Totally agree, definitely the best approach and the fuel saving that some people will bang on about is negligible.

LOL @

"Dont talk such nonesense"

I do not use 'AUTO', so where is the nonesense.

I direct the fan at the screen without 'AUTO' the fan does not come on full.

the fan can be set at which ever speed chosen.

When not on 'AUTO'.

(i have the heat at LOW or 18*C almost always., suits me sir.)

For the pictures i turned up the temp & the fan.

Been in a car where another driver has on 'Auto' & the A/C comes on and off to control the temperature.

to some that is 'random'.

george

The nonsense is in your statement that the A/C will come on at random when in auto. Put simply it's not random because it's meant to do that, random would be if it started singing to you.

An A/C unit controlling the temperature automatically, when in auto function, no matter how you try and twist this George, will never ever be random.

'Twist', behave yourself.

The OP used the term Random, it fitted quite well. so i used it also.

I use no AUTO for A/C.

george

Yes twist, you have more twists on these forums than 300 yards of rope.

The OP asked the question about whether it was random, to which the answer is that it isn't random and has a perfectly rational explanation (as has been explained above). The fact that you don't use auto means it holds even less relevance for you, so I really don't see what your point is?

Yes you are correct, there is a reason for it switching on and off and controling the temperature.

You are correct the word random is being used wrongly by me.

On occasion, or as required to serve the purpose required etc etc.

As and when required will maybe suit the terms as you require.

george

Apology accepted :)

Spin on it like a fan.

:giggle: interesting choice of insult George. Unnecessary, but still interesting. Clearly the idea of banter hasn't quite warmed its way into your heart yet. One day...maybe

'Auto' is a pretty good feature.. It's what people pay a lot of money for on some cars as a factory option.

I cant stand having air blown in my face, the auto function is designed to heat or cool the car in an efficient and pleasant way, and it does it very well.

If you don't believe me.. set your climate control on 21C and try it for a day!!

:)
