Low MPG

Featured Replies

Right, had the vrs for a few months now, and noticed average mpg, at least according to the cimputer , seems low...

Averaging about 40 mpg, and driving like a granny (and not one that rides the clutch), at a steady 60mph for around 20 miles I averaged about 40mpg.

As this is my first diseasel, I know not much about the EGR etc... Is this normal in the cold weather or is something not quite right?

Don't trust the computer too much! See what it actually is over a tank full, which will hopefully include a bit of everything (towns + motorways). - then you can start worrying if it's way off...My VRS averages 50mpg (calculated properly).

My computer says im doing 51mpg and i worked it out as 51.5mpg so mine is good

Although that does seem a low computer reading, my PD100 drops an average of about 5-10Mpg (computer reading) in winter depending on journey length (long-short)

Firstly ignore the computer, the correction factor is probably out. Brim it and then drive till you need more fuel, fill it up to the brim then you know miles covered and fuel used and can accurately work out your mpg. It'll always be lower in winter as they switch to a winter fuel additive package to stop the diesel waxing up.

I'd do what Avalon suggested, work out your actual MPG then you'll know if your trip computer indication is out- over-reading or under-reading. Mine, for instance, is rather optimistic (+15% ish).

In addition to that, the cause of low MPG returns can be attributed to a boost leak and or a blocked EGR valve, and so might be worth a look at if your computer is reflecting (roughly) accurate fuel consumption.

Good luck.
