Alloys to big....

Featured Replies

 Not very happy with myself.... i new they wouldn`t fit but was assured by local VAG tuners:mad: they would...Anyhow:

I was offered 4 Audi RS4 alloys 18" by 8.5j with the standerd offset of 35 for a bargain price, initially though i was told they were 8j so i snapped them up and ordered the tyres from my works to go on them...upon fitting i noticed they were 8.5j this on a 35 offset was to big and they stand about half an inch outside of the arch...swmbo wants the old wheels back on but i still want 18`s

Let this be a warning i`m in the tyre trade and should have checked the wheels before buying...8.5j will not fit unless you have an offset of 30...(best fit is 8x18 offset 35):o

Anyone got any cheap alloys (18)

:( Phil

i got some RS4 replica's on the way, 300 nicker :D

Erm, how can alloys be too big? Alloys only ever come in a 'too small' size. And yes that does include the 22" monsters!

Oh well, you can always sell them on ebay! I'm sure you can get more than you paid for them ;)

Get the arches pulled out half an inch  ... People fit 19x8.5 BBS Le Mans to Golfs all the time :D

:) You can with an offset of 30

Mine with an offset of 35(standard)has put the additional inch and a half to the outer edge I.e 3/4 inch overhang past the wheel arch:eek:

Won't the tyres rub? I reckon you need et 30 with 8.5j rims, you should pop down to your local Ripspeed, I gather they are real pros and will give you good advice as to what to fit.

HTH

:haha:

Golf arches are bigger so will accomodate them no probs. ET30 sticks out more than ET35 BTW.

Am I being thick here? I thought ET was measured in mm's... Does 5mm make THAT much difference?

If I'm way off the mark, I'll apologise in advance.

 May be wrong on that one Eddy...ET30 is rec; for 8.5j rims on VAG cars

If you run the standard 7jx17`s the ET is 35, as are 8jx18 again 35

For 8.5j rims the ET must be 30

ET = amount away from center line of wheel IMHO

Not quite. ET is the distance from the face that meets the hub to the inside edge of the wheel minus half the wheel width. Hence lower value ET sits further out.

Explanation with diagram can be found here.

Also Golf arches are definetely bigger. I could run 18x8 ET35 wheels with 15mm spacers on the back of the Golf, without spacers the same wheels are nearly at the edge of the Arches on the Octavia.

Also what you say is true because the further from the centre line the face meeting the hub is the further under the arch it will fit so as I said lower value sticks out further.

Edited to try and make it a bit clearer, but don't think it is.

Mod's Note: The link above has been added to our Links section for future reference. DGW

cheers for that eddy, makes it a lot clearer in my mind now

lower offset means further into the car :)

Lower offset = higher number ET...

So ET45 is stuck right into the arch but ET25 sticks out a bit.

You could have the back of the wheel skimmed by 5mm ?

Still think ET30 is right so do my books at work:P

Anyhow wheels now taken off and sold to a VW Golf owner:) £96 profit to boot:rolleyes:  :D:rofl:

 Phil

Wow Phil, that's really good

Maybe you could make a living by buying and selling wheels and tyres, what with your knowledge of what fits what? ;)

PS, some people can get right up your nose can't they :D
