Think my car may have been in an accident

Featured Replies

Well (maybe)

Some investigation by a bodyshop has found evidence I couldn't spot, that my car has been resprayed on its driver's side rear quarter, at some point before I took ownership of it.

I admit I've never noticed, but when matey pointed out the blending in, and then the pretty obvious mismatch with the original paint behind my rubbing strips, all was clear. Same goes for the rear quarter too, which might indicate a botched job, as its starting to rust / bobble. Not good news, but I'm booked in on the 27th June to have that sorted, my boot resprayed, and my bumper & other "defective" areas made good / patched up.

Will be nice to have a sense of better condition bodywork again as recently I've got to the point of "oh well" when a huge stone took a chunk out my front bumper... :o

Sorry to hear it.

Is there any legal fault by the previous owner for not telling you?

Generally speaking - no, tends to be 'sold as seen' unless you have it in writing ;)

Some people will be more flexible than that though if you're lucky

I'm assuming if the HPI check came up clean, then it was repaired to the satisfaction of the insurance company so no obligation to mention it when sold....

HPI check? :D

No - I'm not at all bothered by it - Its being sorted out by a reputed local bodyshop to me, for a reasonable sum of money. While he's doing *other* bodywork related things to my car too. ;)

Sounds interesting - looking forward to seeing the results

Its nothing like major new bits being stuck on. Its just repairing the spoiler where I dropped it before fitting. :o Smoothing over the rear badge holes I filled in recently, putting in a sprayed strip of rubber in the gap in the vRS bumper I never bonded together properly. And then using any excess paint to patch up paint defects, such as a nice round mark on one door, where some bird "doo-doo" has eaten into the paint. :(

HPI check? :D

did you not check that it hadn't been recorded as a cat c? or whatever they are....

Damage could have happened when the car was on the way to the dealers from new, as new cars are often damaged and repaired before people get them! Just like my first octy was!

The Big Roof Upgrade?

IIRC it was purchased from another Briskodian

Bought my 2yr old Fabia from a Sparshotts Main Dealer. Didn't look at it closely i'ts bright yellow and I had 4 kids and the missus with me. Anyway they offered me a deal only if i put a deposit on that day. Picked it up no fuel in it nearest open garage 5miles. Got home bloody hell were's the tax disc? Learnt they don't supply used cars with tax. Couldnt drive it for 2 day till I had my insurance hard copy. notice the roof a differnet shade of yellow. Dealer denied any knowledge as did the prev owner Skoda Basingstoke. Pointed out it had never left Skoda dealers and it still had a warranty. Skoda agreed to respray it without even inspecting it.

It's completely unacceptable for a dealer to sell you a car without pointing out that it's not taxed. They would normally sort the tax for you (asking you for a copy of your insurance certificate, if necessary, to do so) and add the charge to the invoice.

Well, now I'm assured that the car hasn't been in an accident whilst in the previous owner's hands, and it was proved to her that it hadn't been in an accident when she got it (as 2nd owner) The mystery deepens somewhat as to what happened, as there's blatantly different coloured paint where the bump strip was...

Not that it really matters now as its being sorted out. Got me wondering about the weird "pimple" spot behind the rubbing strip on the same door... Wonder how THAT got there, when the opposite number was totally clean & unblemished... Well odd. This "pimple" reminds me of the cast-off mark left when fabricating a plastic item in a mould....

There wil allways be different colour paint where a bump strip was before (prolly darker), Sunlight fades paint unless it under a moulding.

This ones lighter though, and the door has been blended in to match the paint on the rear quarter panel... If you look really closely, the two side doors are slightly different shades as well, but you need a really good eye to make it out. Its never been obvious to me in all the time I've cleaned/polished/inspected the car in great detail. :thumbdwn:

Not that it really matters as I keep saying. Its just another one of my "curiosity killed the cat" missions.
