Not really an Octy specific question, but - is this

I just use halfords pink stuff. 15 litres for £10 works really well and the wife likes the smell lol

To answer your question no it isn't Julie.

Why do vag have specific screen washes anyway. Do they do anything different? Formulated differently or just a money making ploy?

I use the costco stuff and de-ionised water

Debatable.

"PERSONALLY" i think they are a money spinner.

Same Holts for me too lol.

The stuff in the little bottle is highly concentrated, lasts ages and doesn't block fan jets. I was just hoping the big bottle was the same stuff 'cos it would have been great value for money, but sadly not.

best stuff I've ever used comes from Lidl, 4.99 IIRC for 5 litres, mixable to 1part screenwash to two parts water, good for down to -10C or -60 if undiluted and -20 at 1:1. Lemony scent and TUV approved I believe, also suitable for fan jets. I use it at 1:2 mixed with the water from the condensor dryer meaning no calcium in it. It also kills bacteria in the washer system.

The stuff in the small silver bottle is clear, just put some in 1/2hr ago. Going on recommendations from this forum I have just used the the lidl stuff. Though it is one of the better screen wash's to use, I have gone back to the vag screen wash, as I feel I does the best job. But at the end of the day, it's a personal choice.

I use the Lidl stuff. Pretty good in my opinion ;-)

And like they say, "your mileage may vary". :)

I'm never touching the Lidl stuff again, it foamed like mad, to the point where my headlight washers made the car look like it had rabies. I've topped up with better stuff once already (when the light came on) and it still foams a lot.

edit: and that was with the concentrate diluted to 1:3 to begin with.

I used the genuine VAG stuff in my Fabia vRS for 5 years until I discovered the Lidl stuff. Used that ever since and now in the Octavia.

Clears the screen, doesn't block the fan nozzles & smells OK. All for £4.99.

As above the Lidl variety can be diluted and here in the south we rarely face temps low enough to warrant using it neat, also works well for me at 1:2.

I've noticed too that it does foam well on the Octy headlight washers, until I got used to it the great burst of atomised mist that swirled up the side of the wings was a bit alarming.

I wish the headlight washers were on a separate button. It's such a waste of fluid.

According to a recent thread they can be turned off - or bypassed by adjusting the length of time you pull on the lever, or something. Not really sure but with looking into.....

You can get the VW/Audi screen wash in 5l bottles - I got mine from TPS in Leicester and works out reasonably price wise. £8.75 +vat.

I bought the quantum stuff from a VW dealer so it must be approved for fan nozzles.

On my 3rd year with the lidl stuff, undiluted. Not noticed the rabid dog effect. Must try harder.

I buy 1-2 bottles of the VAG stuff per year and don't worry about the jets blocking or the pipe falling off in the luggage compartment. If I had to buy much more then perhaps I'd change to a cheaper one but don't feel it worth scrimping on for such a small quantity.

When you go through a box of the stuff (10 bottles) every 9-12 months approx, then it becomes a different matter.

£30-40 vs £6-12.

Why? Is there evidence the VAG stuff stops this??

Excess foam in the washing system can probably be cured with a few spoonfulls of alcohol, methylated spirit, iso propanol (or even aquavit in Scandinavia!)

AG screenwash doesn't seem to do it.

IMHO rear pipe none i can work out. Anything that stops it freezing will do.

Fan jets with hard water, but then do does the lidl stuff.
