Plastikote front grille question

Featured Replies

Hi all

A couple of months ago I sprayed the chrome inner part of my front grille in matte black which I was very pleased with :)

Gave it a good 6 coats at least

Had to re do it again a month later as the odd stone chip took the paint off so I ended up with chrome bits all over it!

Took it off and did it again with a few more coats all over

Now it's back to the same look with chipped bits all over

I know I'm putting enough paint on but is there anything else i can do to try and prevent this?

Maybe lacquer?

I don't want to be taking my grille off every month to re spray it!

Cheers in advance

mine had 8 thick coats on and has been fine for 2 years, infact its still like the day it was done. Id say you arent putting enough on.

I painted mine, in about 5 months it's chipped twice. Tempted to get it carbon dipped!

Ok cheers

Vinyl wrap?

There's a difference between plasticote and plastidip, plastidip is quite hard wearing.

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong :/

plastidip cures like a vinyl and peels off when you no longer want it. . .

plastikote is a paint. . .did you key the chrome first?. . if not its gonna just chip off all the time.

That plasti kote stuff is crap mate! In my experience anyway :)

What am I best doing with grille as it is now then with this plastikote on?

Sanding it first then use the plastidip?

I just sanded all the chrome back with with 120 grit wet and dry, good wash with panel wipe, then used a coat of primer, 3 good coats of cheap satin black and couple of coats of lacquer!

All good 5 months later!

I know all could change over this cold spell but so far so good!!!

Need to get a good key and clean to start with if painting!!

Hope this helps
