Coming home lights mod

Featured Replies

Not myself, can't see the need for it, never needed "courtesy" light, never will. Its the kind of thing that appeals to selling cars. However doesn't make your car faster once you've bought it with them does it !

That said, at least its an application of electronics driven by need/desire, and can see how in some cases someone like yourself might have a real need from them....and I can see your concern about the draw taken. For that reason I wouldn't bother, its not like tripping over in the dark is becoming a constant issue

However as opposed to permanent DRL which is a load of completely unnecessary EU bull.......can't understand why (other than some kind of bling factor) why anyone would retro fit them...

Yeah, I've been driving for around 3 / 4 years now and never had an issue (mostly because the last two cars I had to walk up to it and put the key in the lock!). I suppose it is a nice gimmick, and it can be quite handy at times, but I can also find it quite irritating. Whilst camping with mates, we used cars to blow up the air beds, start engines to make sure battery doesn't go flat, the one with auto headlights illuminating the field at 11pm. You can imagine how well that went down :D

As for DRLs, don't get me going. At the end of the day, if you miss the big car shaped object coming at you, I can't imagine two lights helping either!

It's for the spastics who don't have the brain capacity to put their lights on when driving on country roads in ****ing rain on dull cloudy days.

Put DRLs on every car I say.

Comments like yours don't help One Iota.

Wrong. Its the equivalent of force feeding people with vitamins enriched in their Bread when they neither ask for it, or want it.

(Calcium carbonate (E170) is added to all brown and white flour products in the UK and has been a legal requirement for almost 5 years. This is carried out to ensure that vulnerable groups receive enough calcium in their diet.)

Yet still a good / required thing in your opinion ? No. Darwinism has its own cause, don't try and fight it as its not in the greater good. Whoops we went off topic a bit there, it was meant to be about coming home lights lol

Wow this thread escalated quickly.

I think Korban will be ****ed you never pm'd him first before buying one of these

His is adjustable main beam / sidelights and fits into the fusebox out of the way IIRC

Much better IMO and guaranteed by a nice bloke not some internet ghost

Korbans ya man

I know this one's bringing up an old one and it's a mod I've considered doing, but the draw back of the unit mimicking the interior lights putting the headlights on whenever the door was opened put me off. However...

Just found this. Looks like an alright bet for anyone who fancies it? Not too expensive at £20 either!

Could something like this be done via vagcom?

I never PM'd him first before buying one? Errr, I haven't bought one, I was just flicking through fleabay and spotted this. BUT, afaik with the one Korban's done, and that I've seen all over the vag forums now, it imitates the interior lights putting the headlights or whichever you've got wired up on whenever the interior light is on. If correct (and your assumptions are correct, I haven't PMd Korban), then I wouldn't want one :) I'll get him PMd at some point to get it cleared up, unless he pops up on here before I get a chance to. All advice is welcome :)

I do love that colour :p My last two cars were blue so having a silver one is a huge change for me :p

First thanks for the comment about me and my car if you haven't seen the car yet then here's a quick pic B)

Front end as changed abit (top and bottom grilles are now black)

Now back on topic

Just had a look at the ebay listing and it seems very similar to my system except it works off the central locking signal rather than the interior light system. The description of the operation of the unit seems a little vague/unclear, it sounds as if it activates the headlamps if you unlock or lock the car !

My home brew system switches the lights on when you unlock the car or open any of the doors as long as its dark enough and they then stay on for about a minute or less if you lock the door. I designed them to over come a particular problem, in that my drive at the side of the house is very dark at night (no near by street lamps) and although there is an automatic outside light by the door it does not illuminate the keyhole for the door. Now with my system I park the car, open the door and the side lights come on and light up the door lock so that I can insert the key easily. I then open the front door, lock the car and the side light switch off - great.

Thanks Binzie, but I am not at all bothered by someone buying elsewhere because I am not making them for a profit really, I did post full instructions in the thread here http://www.briskoda...._ leaving home and another member (softscoop) posted some pictures of his install to help out.

To help out other members who wanted to install the kit but could not solder everything together I offered a compete kit of parts already assembled for them to fit. I also added the option to include an extra relay to switch the headlamps/fogs as well.

I have emailed the seller of the kit asking if they would send me a copy of the installation instructions to see how easy they are to fit. I will let you all know the outcome if I get a reply.

As for "DRLs" I have had them on mine for about a year and a half and I would not be without them. Anything which makes my car more visible on the road cannot be a bad thing. I have even doubled up on my rear side and brake lights and also fitted a flashing centre brake light again to reduce the chance of some idiot bumping the car. Even my parking lights have been modified to be more visible.

Cheers for popping up Karl, it does appear that yours is better the others I've seen. Would it work with the tailgate too? I think my main concern would be that after gigs and such at night, I have the door open a lot whilst loading gear in, the last thing I want to be flattening my battery having the lights on all the time.

The issue I've noticed with other ones is that since it mimics the interior light, essentially during the day when the door's open or the interior light is on such as when the door's open, the headlights have been known to come on. I'll presume your way of doing eliminates this as it's got the light sensor?

Don't forget if the door is left open for a longish period, the interior light (and thus headlights) will turn off. :)

The ones that *REALLY* get me are those who seem to think there's some law you don't put any lights on whatsoever before some fixed time, possibly 6pm, especially at this time of year when it's dark then and the street lights are on.

There did use to be a system called dim-dip, whereby dipped beams came on dim with sidelights no matter what - now that was technology intended for people without the brains to put the dipped beam on in addition to sidelights.

But in addition to your comment, stats show that less accidents happen with DRLs, hence their justification. Not that dissimilar from making seatbelts a legal requirement. Alongside the fact that LEDs use little power while being bright, which means less impact on the atmosphere as they need less energy to power than headlights.
