kurb light and Door open light on dash out

Featured Replies

I have no kurb light on drivers side and when I open the door the light on the dash doesn't show the door is open, (garage has already locked my keys in the car because of this in the passed). now from reading I am guessing its the microswitch in the door thats gone.

I have seen some guides but I'm far from comfortable doing it myself, so would I take it to a garage or an auto electrician (if the latter does anyone know of a decent one in the North-East) and a rough price I should expect to pay to get it fixed..

I doubt any garages, etc would replace the microswitch (too much hassle if it fails), so are therefore more likely to recommend the much more expensive lock replacement route....

im guessing that would require all locks replacing aswell, so that the keys the same ?

I think the locks and the barrel are separate.

No not all locks are replaced . not needed. The culprit is more likely to be a microswitch. The VAG group cars share the same Locking mechanism (well the golf does for sure). So a second hand locking mechanism could help you or a brand new one is around £100.

Not too difficult to fit and you reuse your door locking barrel as this is separate to the main locking mechanism .

The guide I did found here.

Can help you even if it is just to remove the locking mechanism. That full microswitch repair was fiddly and not sure I would go to the bother again, but a few years on and still working fine.

Having done a couple of these now, I can strip the door replace the lock mechanism and rebuild the door in around 45mins. The first one I did took a couple of hours to get the lock out and I would have failed completely if I didn't have access to the various guides on here and other VW forums.

Yes £120 is about right for the complete lock, I opted for this route rather than replace the micro switch, although if you have a very early Octy, you may simply have broken solder connections.

Expect a garage will charge same again for fitting. Also I guess your lights on warning buzzer doesn't sound either?

thx for the advice guys

really not up for doing it myself, can see something going terribly wrong...

mines a 2003 vRS not sure if that's early enough or not ??

and yes headlight warning doesn't work either, already had my neighbours knock 3 or 4 times as I keep leaving them on. it was this that made me investigate the fault, but seems im gonna have to leave it for now, as doesn't sound like there's a cheap fix
