Exhaust Painting

Featured Replies

Morning all.

I was wondering what everyone would suggest as the best means to protect my exhaust [pictured below] from rusting. I've found in the past that the "exhaust paint" wasn't actually worth the extra they charge you for it ... so I was going to cover it in a thick coating of hamerite and then wrap the manifold in some heat wrap. Any better suggestions?

Dont waste your time just buy a stainless one.

Quite; but the stainless system is £500... so for the time being we'll keep this one going...

Difficult in practise to achieve as a fair amount of corrosion occurs from the inside out. ;)

You need a proper high temperature ceramic coating or something like Jetcoat. Cost will be less than stainless replacement but not cheap. Don't use Hammerite, it will just burn. Used to be some stuff called VHT paint, not sure how good it is at corrosion protection.

Hi, I agree with chris, don't bother painting it with hammerite, it will just flake off. Also I don't like the idea of heat wrapping exhaust manifolds that are made of Cast iron/steel, you end up with moisture getting trapped under the wrap and it rots them out quicker than if you just left it alone.

Ceramic coating it good but it's very expensive, I think ruffday gave you the most sound advice... Make one out of stainless steel.

I've got a ceramic coating on my stainless down pipe. I don't know how much corrosion resistance it offers though.
