Tuning the CR2.0TDI

Featured Replies

Just looking at the Blackline vRS which is a steal at the moment with the current deals.

What is this engine like with tuning. I literally have no idea regarding the 2.0TDi engines.

Pretty reasonable returns, especially once the DPF's off.

Anyone have dyno graphs with the before and after curves?

Are they reliable when tuned regarding turbo life and fuel pumps etc?

I have a dyno from when I had mine; I will see if I can find it.

Regarding reliability mine was fine but only had it for 12 months after it was mapped.

Mine made 204bhp and 300+lbs. It put it on a par with a standard tsi/tfsi in my opinion. I was disappointed with my CR; the performance was a bit lacking and I only managed 37mpg. That's why I changed it for a tsi vRS.

Thats a valid point. Is there anyone near Nottingham/Derby with a mapped CR2.0TDI that could take me out for a drive?

Id expect it to feel slow and sluggish compared to the Fabia, but part of me wants the diesel to limit the amount of engine tuning i do but i dont want it to be a sluggish boring drive.

Gather a decent remap makes the CR a reasonable amount quicker than a standard TSi; 310 - 330lb/ft of torque is on the cards too; thats remapped S3 levels of punch. I think the lure of great economy and not having to worry about super unleaded is a boon too

But what is the power/torque curve like. 330lbft is great if its for a decent portion of the rev band but if its spikey then it means very little.

I prefer DSG to manual and you have decent brakes as well. Probably be a similar setup to how i would have my car tbh, so it might be a good gauge of what i could expect.

Cheers

Sorry Sy, dont know for certain but fairly sure it more or less follows the standard cars curve; more or less flat between 1500 and 2500rpm then gradual tail off. Stronger delivery but doubt it will radically change how its delivered

My remapped CR couldn't pull away from a Mazda 6 diesel; that was the final straw for me. It really wasn't that quick despite the 300+ lbs of torque. My remapped tsi vRS would have destroyed it and that had very similar torque but importantly more than 40bhp more.

Can't be certain for the CR, haven't seen any graphs that I can recall either.

But with the PD remapped, you get a flatter delivery, less peaky and its held for longer. Much more enjoyable :)

Well ill see what brimmas drives like. If its not quite what im expecting I guess ill stick with the original petrol plan. Its just the extras included in the blackline model make it a very tempting prospect.

Sounds like the CR vRs isn't necessarily for you. I personally find mind very rewarding to drive whilst still delivering good economy. If I was that interested in burning people up off the lights then I'd just buy a Caterham and beat virtually anything on the road. The Cr is a fantastic drive. End.

The CR is a really nice smooth engine; it's just not that quick!

My only CR experience so far is with a CR140 Mk6 Golf over a couple of hundred miles.

Felt very smooth and un-diesel like, quiet and only noticeable it was a diesel was at cold tickover. At std power it felt a bit breathless above 3k and if you're accelerating in higher gears at m/way speeds.

Certainly tempting at the moment with the Blackline, especially when you compare it to 2nd hand ones. Cheaper to buy new!

I dont do traffic light gran prix personally. Im more into trackdays. My problem is coming from a long line of high powered petrols to a low powered diesel.

I do like the idea of having a quick diesle though. Would be nice not to have to see horric mpg everytime i boot it.

Me and my mate both in Octavia vRS's, mine a tuned petrol, his a std diesel spent an afternoon at the nurburgring together using each others cars. Mine was much much faster but ultimately i was refueling every 10 laps he was doing 20+, and in all honesty he might not have been anywhere near as fast as my car but he had just as much fun.

Horses for courses; I dont think anyone would deny that a remapped TSi is without doubt much quicker; the TSi being the better tuning platform. A turbo petrol car will always provide a more sporting drive than a performance oriented diesel.

However the diesel for most is considerably more cost effective and responds well to a remap with little detriment to its already cheaper running costs. Its a good compromise.

what are the diesle like fro traction and axle tramp then?

Also do they chew through turbos and clutches when mapped?

Also whos to say that Mazda wasnt remapped becomming all too common nowadays; the more powerful variant makes 180ps standard and has a late-200's lb/ft torque output as standard anyway.

I saw a MK6 2.0 TDi 140 Golf being driven on rails some months ago; I had exactly the same car so did my best to keep up with it; absolutely left me for dead in a straight line and I was giving it all it had; can only assume it was mapped.

The below was from when I was enquiring a recent example was sent to me (open ECU) they said the car was stock bar K&N panel filter and baffles out of the box, had 15 or 20K on it and was on BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power from new only.

Is that right?? Standard figures appear to be 185hp and 300lb/ft! Seems a little optimistic to me given the standars car should only be making 258lb/ft

It wouldn't surprise me that the CR170 produces more than the manufacturers figures.

  • Author

std figures are up 10Hp more than they should just as the mapped fgures are up 10Hp more than they should be. In a nutshell the dyno is overreading by about 10Hp
