tuning box

Featured Replies

I have just bough a standard 05 fabia vrs and was thinking about fitting a tuning box from tdi-tuning that costs 120 pounds.Does anyone have one or have any knoledge about them, thanks

I would always stay clear of tuning boxes but that's just my opinion... Remaps are just as cheap nowadays and are safer IMO :)

Their are two types of tuning boxes for the mk1.

1. Bypasses the fuel temp sensor and sends a constant high temp to the ecu. As a result the ecu increases how long the injectors are open for, duration. Costs around £20 of eBay. Can be made for much less.

2. Bypasses the signal being sent to the injectors. You normally have a few setting to choose from. These setting determine how much extra fuel is sent across the whole rev range.

The fuel temp one over time can cause the engine light to come on due to a fixed signal been sent for x amount of time.

The second indirectly causes boost increase due to the hotter exhaust gasses. How much depends on the settings.

I agree with preferring a remap. However some can just be as crude as a tuning box.

Number one above is like driving with the choke on an old car out all the time. You'll get a fault code, for running rich since the lambda readings will not agree with the injected fuel. Eventually the engine or turbo will fail due to bore wash and excess soot.

A decent remap need not be expensive. We have at least one forum sponsor who can supply a decent well reviewed map for not much more. I would save your pennies and get a decent remap.

Also don't forget to tell the insurance company since it is a declarable engine mod, sadly I think some never do.

Theirs no lambda sensor or maps on this ecu. That came on the edc16 ecu.

Thanks for the advice guys, will give the tuning box a miss.

Do you need to tell you Insurance company if you have a remap (as it is an engine mod) ?

Need to tell the insurance about ANY change to the "standard original specification"

Which sponsor and how much is it exactly? Thanks :)
