It's a good engine and not as noisy as some reports would have you believe. My 55reg Fabia has the 1.9 PD diesel engine. I've always used the correct PD oil and it's covered 110k miles faultlessly, burning no oil between oil changes.

From outside it sounds pretty much exactly like the PD130 in the Cordoba. Inside is a different matter and it sounds very quiet and smooth in comparision to the noise that could be heard in the cabin of the Cordoba.

I'm guessing this is down to extra sound deadening and it being a different car etc.

It's a cracking engine really and gets some really good comments looking around the internet relating to it's reliability etc. Don't hear of many PD105 problems capared to PD130.

Phil

Had the exact same engine in my 2007 Caddy it was and still is an absolute peach of an engine, 60 litre fuel tank i could easily get 540 miles from it, servicing was so easy it was enjoyable to work on.

We have driven 127 miles since filling up and it's saying we can get another 520 miles out of it! Very pleased especially with everything else we have gained with the car.

Just have to get Sven to slow down a bit on the motorway. We went in the old car to the cinema on wednesday night. I saw the needle hovering anywhere between 80-100mph! Lol.

Do some brim-to-brim calcs over a couple of tanks Phil, then we can improve the accuracy of the MPG & range read-out with VCDS ;)

Most I've adjusted are optimistic by 10-15%.

True.

Will do that on the next fill up... might be a while though. We don't use the car much through the week as we cycle to work and so 55 litres of diesel might take some getting through!

Steve where is this in vcds please, would like to change mine. Mike was going to do it, but we couldn't meet up when I came to Blackburn after Christmas

Thanks Steve.

Another big improvement we've also seen over the old car is the brakes!

We always felt they were very under-assisted which I have also seen people complaining about on various forums and on here.

In the new car they have a much better feel to them and don't need to be pressed anywhere near as hard to start getting some braking from them unlike the Cordoba where they would have to be at least 1/4 pressed to get some assistance!

Just thought I would update this thread with a couple of pics after the wash and wax today.

Also just to say that the car is booked in at the dealers to look at a suspected DMF failure. No sweat as it's covered under warranty. I don't think of it as a problem really and see it that we will be getting a brand new flywheel fitted.

Also cleaned up the poo shoots with some metal polish:

Looking good but where is your Briski sticker??

Haha. I've got one in the house somewhere...

If I can't find it then I will have to just buy a new one.

Phil

Looking good Phil.

A decent result on the DMF really, in the fact that you can get it sorted under warranty. Indicative of low mileage examples I think, as it's probably had more a hard time around town perhaps?

A quality SMF conversion works brilliantly on the PD105 though, I have to say. Just ask Mike Holroyd :) - could be worth discussing whether that could be specced instead? Would mean a fresh clutch as well, but would presume they'd fit one as a matter of course with a DMF replacement too.

Very nice car. Good colour too :)

Yes it's spent it's life with a lady owner in Scarborough (hills).

And Steve... it's a DSG...

Phil

Oh yeah. Whoops ;)

That's a classic - it's been a looooong day :drunk:

  • Author

Haha.

That's ok... I'll let you off.

The DSG box and the clutches are silky smooth so don't think there's an issue there. In fact it's smooth even with some wear on the DMF. Just a slight knock/rattle can be heard sometimes and the squeek on startup. The knock/rattle normally occurs in situation like reversing into the drive. The clutch engages and the car moves back then as it reaches the slope over the path and it is laboured slightly there is a rattle that definitely sounds like DMF.

I'm sure they'll sort. Been very helpful and forthcoming so far.

Phil

Don't know much about the DMF setup in the DSG box, but I'd have thought it should still be fine especially at that mileage. As it would be difficult for user abuse to occur, as the system is effectively software controlled.

Yes that's one reason we liked it.

It can be all too easy to slip up changing gear especially in a hurry (overtaking or in an emergency avoidance situation) whereas the DSG will always be in gear and so easy to get down the gears for an overtake etc.

I did, afterall reck our old Peugeot by getting 2nd gear instead of 4th at 70mph on the motorway

Never updated in here.

The rattle was actually the air intake rattling! Fixed by the garage for us.

They have also since fitted a new starter motor to cure the squeak and a new ignition switch and barrel to cure the problem with locks etc.

It now has a Brisky sticker in.

I managed to fit my Bluetooth in the end.

Very very pleased with her. Steady run to Knaresborough today saw over 59mpg on the dash which isn't half bad for a big auto Octavia I think.

Taking it to Germany again next week with roof bars and bikes on the roof.

Phil

Have a good trip Phil!

You going to the National meet?

  • Author

I completely forgot about that!

Might have to think about that. We are driving back from Eurotunnel on 27th and will have all our camping gear so maybe a nights camping is in order nearby that night then be there for the meet in the morning.

The car will probably be distgusting and full of grime and with bikes on the roof but who cares!?

Phil

Well that could work :)

I'm sure you'll find a jetwash en route :D

Haha. No chance! I'm not fussed about it being clean. Would rather spend that time getting a beer down my neck! :giggle:
