Occasional squealing noise at start up!

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise me as to whether or not the following is anything to worry about?

I bought a new Octavia vRS Blackline diesel DSG back in October 2012, Occasionally at a cold start I notice a squealing noise coming from under the bonnet, it only lasts for about 10 - 20 seconds then completely goes away. It doesn't always do it but I'm pretty sure it tends to do it when its stood out in the damp overnight or after I've washed it off, not sure if this is relevant!

Come to think of it, I had a 57 plate Volvo V50 2.0D some time back and I seem to remember that did similar all the time I owned it!

Any idea's as its done it from brand new and I don't really want to take it back to the dealer unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks

Rob

A common creator of this sort of noise is a drive belt.

..probably a drive belt...if it is, nothing really to worry about

I think it is a belt squealing, just wondered if it was the norm or something wrong?

Anyone else experience this?

it shouldn't be doing it, but it is most likely the Aux belt slipping. Although not a major problem, it will get worse unless its attended to because each time it does it the belt is loosing its grippy surface and becoming shiny, so it will slip even more.

OK thanks for that mate, you reckon I should get the dealer to take a look then? You know if its a simple job to adjust?

There is a tensioner on the belt, so it should not slip at all unless the tensioner has become weak or damaged. A dealer visit is advised, but its not an emergency visit as such.

OK, thanks for the info.

Yeah it's not easy to record the noise accurately. Please let me know if you do happen to find out what it is
