Skoda cannot use RS - so how come Renault can?

Featured Replies

So the Skoda RS varients are known as vRS certainly in the UK. I believe this is due to some kind of "spat" with Ford and their use of the letters RS.

So with interest I read a story over at PH about the forthcoming Renault Clio RS - http://pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=26937

So then. How come Skoda/VAG get dragged over the coals for the use of RS yet Renault seem to be able to get away with it?

Can not or just, do not use just 'RS' in the UK.

the 'v' is in lower case and as i understand it is there instead of above a letter 'S' in Skoda.

'RS' is in capitals in the UK,

ie Skoda or Octavia or Fabia vRS. same difference as Skoda RS.

Audi TT RS

Audi RS3

&

Porsche used 'RS' in the UK.

I thought the Renault based RS was an abbreviation of RenaultSport so it actually R.S.

As seen here on the Twingo....

It's all in the semantics I think....

They are also not actually called an RS. Current range is:

Megane RenaultSport 265

Twingo RenaultSport 133

Clio 200

Not an RS in sight.

audi use RS too....

Maybe Skoda are happy to be different now? 'VRS' is well enough known to be associated with the brand.

Yeah audi use RS, no issues with use, just Skoda choosing not too. Maybe vag didnt want too man brands with the same names.

I work for Renault and it is literally a badge. Known to us as Renault sport ( the brand) also most renaults (r.s models) also some with Renault sport written on them I.e the rear badge says

Renault Rs

Sport Kinda like this :)

Jag has just released the xf rs?

Are they not ford now anyways?

Jag are fords now yup.

So its the new mondeo xf rs then lol

No they aren't!

They are part of the TaTa Steel owned JLR (Jaguar LandRover) Group.

Ford own the copyright and worldwide marketing rights to RS, but only in capitals and together with no spaces between the letters, so rs or any other version of that is allowed.

Spot on I believe..... I've seen elsewhere that the 'v' was put at the front for a reason... giving the subtle 'v's to Ford.

I guess this has actually worked in Skoda's favour as anyone who likes (decent) car knows what a vRS is

I am still trying to find any evidence of Ford having any claim or copyright on 'RS',

Rallye Sport hardly seems to be enough.

Anyone got a link to anything with their World Wide or even the UK rights to RS,

is it even a Trade Mark ?

Is the Trade Mark not 'Ford TeamRS' ?

george

So how come there know as RS in europe? I though it was only the uk rights ford had......i could be totaly wrong though

If anyone asks i say it stands for "very rapid skoda" :D

I'm sure I read a long time ago that Ford had a pop at Skoda about this and Skoda came out on top on the legal challenge and have the right to use RS, but decided to keep the 'v' just to rub Ford's nose in it. Quite possibly just an urban myth though coz I'll be blowed if I can remember where I read it.

Gaz

The "v" is only for the UK market. In Europe they're known only as "Octavia RS" etc.

The badge can be the same in other countries & reads 'vRS', but people just say 'RS'.

it is us that say the whole thing.

george

Yeah the badge is the same but its not an RS over seas. If you look at a brochure from Germany for example it is an Octavia RS.

I remember reading somewhere that Ford did have the rights to use the RS title in the UK. Although as has been said, Jag use it, Renault sort of do and I'm sure a couple of other marques do too.

Ford sold off all their brands over the last few years. Jaguar/Landrover to Tata, Volvo to Geely of China and also disposed of their share in Mazda.

Volvo are discontinuing production of the S40/V50 and C30 from February as they are all made in fords factory in Gent, Belgium...which is closing. I also believe the V70/S80 are also being discontinued as they also use chassis/components from Ford.

skodanorman,

there might be a particular reason for them just saying RS.

Yes the v is for victory of the back of this.

Thought it was XFR-S?

Didn't fords rights over RS expire a few years ago?

Jag are fords now yup.

Not owned by ford, some mechanicals are for derived like the AJ engines.

However a new plant at Castle Bromwich will see them phased out.

Jag are fords now yup.

Not correct Colin. They were owned by ford for a while and the wee jag was essensially a tarted up Mondeo, but the jaguar land rover are now part of TaTa and are moving to new platforms and mechanics as the historic licencing deals with ford and bmw expire
