Ford Racing Puma

Featured Replies

As some may remember I posted on here a few eeks ago asking what the Ford Racing Puma was like. A new guy started at work who had one and was saying how amazingly fast it was.

Well, this morning I turned out behind him about 5 miles from work and followed him in traffic. First thing I noticed was the standard exhaust note - it was great, even pops slightly on over-run.

He then turned off the main road onto a great bit of wide B road with gentle curves, no traffic ahead so he floored it. Obviously I also floored it.

He was actually holding me up, I wouldnt say I'd have enough power to overtake but I could have gone faster if he wasnt there.

When we got to the office his words were "Bloody hell, mate, that Skoda doesnt half shift! I wont say I wasn't trying because I was pushing it really hard"

Clearly the Puma would have "got me in the twisties" but on this road I was well impressed.

Thanks Mr Jabba.

According to the stats, it weighs a shade over a tonne and has 152bhp (from a 1.7-16v engine! ), so would probably trouble a standard vRS/4x4! :)

Too little torque.

i raced one when i had my M3 and TBH i thought they were a lot of things, but fast isn't one of them. I think my standard Fabia could irritate it - but they look like they could be very fast and i believe they handle well.

I'd expect handling to be better than the Furby - the standard Furby would probably not have stayed quite as close though :D

That's a fair tune on the Puma as standard though, must rev pretty high to hit those figures I'd imagine ;)

Driving pleasure has little to do with outright speed (as my Golf seems to be teaching me). The Puma in any guise has lots of driving pleasure, so it may not be fast, but it is good to drive, and lets face it, its hardly a slouch is it?

Anyway, with 214 bhp v 150, are you surprised you are faster in a straight line?

a FRP would murder a furby for driving enjoyment...

As much as I liked the Furby, I'd have to agree really.

And so it should for double the price!!

Nice looking cars TBH but lacking in power, could do with Cosworth having a play.

If I remember correctly from when I had a standard 1.7 Puma, the FRPs were

Pumabuild in Birmingham have put a Focus RS engine in an FRP and I had a ride in it. Let's just say that gave the car the power it deserved and was very very quick. It also has the special "blue" prototype shocks in that make the handling even better than standard :)

Yeah, that is one bad a$$ car - they've tuned it up to over 350bhp with more to come apparently! I would love one of them...

Agreed, went out in one when Pumabuild built my puma/fiesta and the handling is amazing, the balance and width of the car allow it to corner with agility, i wouldnt have a go at one on a twisty road!

Fun to drive is much more than power, too much power can ruin a car if the handling and brakes aren't up to the job. Its about having the right balance of power/grip/handling.

One thing that makes cars really good to drive is having someone you don't care about as the owner, e.g. hire company. Their cars don't always have a lot of power, but they sure go fast down B roads, and they are a lot of fun!
